From La Stampa:
Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X, founded by Archbishop Lefebvre, has been summoned to the Vatican next 14 September. It is the first summit after the doctrinal talks last year in Rome, where there were clashes between the Holy See and Lefebvrian delegations.
As readers will recall, since 2009 the Commission Ecclesia Dei, which deals with the Society of St. Pius X, has been incorporated in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and it has been entrusted to the leadership of Monsignor Guido Pozzo.
The doctrinal discussions, which addressed all of the nodes considered problematic by Lefebvre, who believes that, in some places, the Second Vatican Council represents a break with the tradition of the Church, have been concluded in recent months.
Now the Vatican should subject to Fellay some memoranda of understanding, clarifying doctrinal points, as for the Council, on the interpretation of the continuity in the reform suggested since December 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI as the more authentic interpretation of the texts of Vatican II.
A proposal for a canonical adjustment will be submitted to the Society only if doctrinal difficulties are overcome, and that will resolve the current situation, in which the Lefebvrist community finds itself now.
Although the Pope, in a gesture of goodwill, nullified the excommunication of the four bishops ordained by Archbishop Lefebvre in January 2009, bishops and priests of St. Pius X still live in a state of canonical irregularity.
The proposal which has been studied by the Vatican, would allow Lefebvrists the establishment of an ordinariate similar to that offered by the Pope has to Anglicans who wanted to come into communion with the Roman Catholic Church. In this way, the Fraternity would depend on the Holy See (and specifically on the Ecclesia Dei Commission) and could retain its characteristics without having to answer to the diocesan bishops.
The meeting of 14 September, that Vatican Insider is able to confirm, therefore, represents a new step in the journey of these troubled years. But it is premature to provide conclusions: in fact, it is known that within the SSPX there coexist different sensitivities and some consider difficult to reach an agreement.
It should be noted that Pope Ratzinger, who wanted to close the Lefebvre mini-schism, has already completed two very significant steps in the direction requested by the Fraternity: he has liberalized the old pre-Conciliar Missal and has lifted the excommunications in force since 1988.

I pray that Rome and the SSPX reach an agreement that is pleasing to God. The SSPX understand the crisis of the Church better than most and will be able to accomplish more good once their canonical situation is fully resolved. May God bless the Holy Father and the SSPX.

Amen to that !

I wonder if they do understand, especially Bishop Fellay, who is as stubborn as a mule. If they did care for the Church and the establishment of so many good things their order can offer, I would think they would be eager and cooperative to be in complete harmony with the Pope and their fellow Catholics. Instead it seems they are “holier than Rome” and we must all come to them.

Well, if the Pope creates an SSPX ordinate we must be obedient to the Pope and accept his act, no?

Well, what we need understand is that many things the SSPX has been saying for years, now we see high ranking members of the Curia saying.

“But you know, it’s the priests, it’s the bishops, it’s the Catholic universities: they are full of heresies!” Sound like something from the pulpit of a SSPX chapel ? Nope. Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Cardinal Prefect William Joseph Levada’s number two man.

Not to mention that they are probably a cause for some of the crisis.

But I do hope they repent and return to the Church.

Vatican Insider has called the Popes “Pope Wojtyła” and “Pope Ratzinger” for years. I’ve generally assumed it’s a cultural thing, more acceptable or even conventional in Italian, sort of like how in religious orders in which a man or woman’s name is changed the original last name is retained and is used in certain circumstances. So perhaps you could say Pope Benedict’s full name is Benedictus Ratzinger, or maybe Benedictus XVI Ratzinger. In any case we never write or say that in English, so it sounds strange and even disrespectful. Maybe someone with more knowledge of Italian conventions can clarify if this is something like the truth.

Getting back to the central topic, I have mixed feelings about the idea of SSPX reconciling without publically repenting of their gravely sinful and scandalous conduct, or about bishop Williams in particular becoming a Catholic bishop in good standing, but I what I would be interested in seeing is whatever documents have been produced by the Vatican in the course of these discussions interpreting the Council, if they are ever made public.

This is interesting news, though I think it is premature to speculate and the headline of this thread is rather misleading as no offer has in fact been made. It is also old news as Bishop Fellay announced on June 17 that he had been summoned to meet Levada in September. His remarks on the subject at that time are worth keeping in mind now:
“Some people say that something is going to happen. No; this is not true! The truth is that Cardinal Levada has called me to Rome and it appears that it will be around the middle of September. That’s the only thing I know. It’s about the discussions we had with Rome. After these discussions, it had been said that “the documents will be given to the higher authorities.” These are the exact words. That’s the only thing I know about the future. All the rest is made up. Please don’t run after these rumors.”

y.

I believe a lot of the success for this measure will depend on who will select any future Bishops for the SSPX. If Bishop nominees are selected by Rome and not by the SSPX with confirmation by Rome, then its over. This was an underlying problem back in the 1980’s.

I think there is more trust between Bp. Fellay and B XVI than with JP II. I’m praying for a good outcome.

Rome is not going to let the SSPX pick their own bishops. I am unaware if of any group in the Catholic Church that has this privilege. But, they could easily maintain the status quo where the SSPX selects it’s own leadership (as the Jesuits do). Bishop Fellay leads the SSPX not because he is a bishop but because he was elected their superior. Also, If the SSPX is regularized the need for having their own bishops would be limited.

I think we can trust Rome to act accordingly. They may have a member of the Curia register here and ask our blessing before an offer is made. But I doubt it.😉

Precisely. This is why you have to take all translations into English with a grain of salt.

No offense, but this article expresses more fear than fact. When words like “ultra,” “splinter,” etc. are used, it certainly doesn’t create much doubt as to the author’s bias.
There is certainly bias, but I doubt he just made up the claim that the Vatican is likely to offer an Ordinariate to the SSPX without some source.

In addition Vatican Insider is reporting the same.

And, The Vatican approved a nun joining a SSPX convent.

And, the SSPX’s German website has a story praising Pope Benedict…at World Youth Day.

And, then there is that meeting on September 14.

Something is a foot!

I’ll agree with your earlier assessment (post #12). No more SSPX bishops in any case.
