Contarini:
That’s a copout. The comparison implied that the relationship between Catholics and Orthodox is in some way like that of the West and the Communist world.

There is one reason and one reason only why accommodation with Communism was wrong. That is because Communism was a totalitarian “evil empire” and accommodation with it was a betrayal of its victims and showed a naive unawareness of its ultimate intent to dominate the world. The use of the same language of “accommodation” only makes sense if Orthodoxy also shares these traits. Otherwise the comparison is utterly senseless.

There have been more journalists killed in Russia and and Russian controlled areas in the last few years than in any other country, Putin has practically destroyed all the independent media, fake charges of one kind or another have taken out the big media boys and sackings and worse the working press. The Moscow Patriarchate continues the agreement it made with Stalin to align itself with the government, Alexiy II’s public support of Putin’s genocide in Chechnya an example.

The Vatican’s accommodation of communism and disregard of the Russian Orthodox Church under Patriarch Tikhon was matched by the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s support of communism and the Church it organised by giving it official recognition in ‘world Orthodoxy’ against Patriarch Tikhon and the bishops and people loyal to the Church. I don’t find it easy to discuss this, so might not contribute any further, there is information out there.

❤️ Thank you for your honesty and candor. All of our churches have these things, they are difficult, they make us sad, but I appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut.

I was pleased to read it too.

BTW Sophia, I have posted about John Allen’s book and the Da Vinci Hoax in the Apologetics forum in case you want to visit there.
It has been a wonderful break for me from the nastiness that can go on in the Politics section, particularly now that we are getting so close to Nov. 2.

Antonio 😃

Thanks for letting me know: I look forward to “reading and imbibing” a bit; I am very fond of his work.

As to the Da Vinci hoax - Amy Wellborn has written a book and is now touring the country with it - since she has a blog I love reading about her experiences talking about her book.
