Vatican publication rehabilitates hackers

Internet hackers have acquired a dubious reputation for piracy, sabotage and the spilling of sensitive secrets, but an authoritative Vatican publication appears to rehabilitate them and traces parallels between hacker philosophy and the teachings of Christianity.

Despite the surprising headline and opening paragraph, the article goes on to say that Fr. Antonio Spadaro makes a distinction between “hackers”, which he sees as ethical and creative, and “crackers”, who engage in criminal behavior.

Its not a new distinction.

This distinction is also the correct one – it’s just that journalists perpetuate the confusion of both terms. The Free Online Dictionary of Computing (FOLDOC) is one source that maintains this distinction.

Yep. I remember similar stories 15 years ago, with reporters all agog that to be a hacker wasn’t a bad thing.

I guess journalist sometimes like to perpetuate myths for the sake of a good storyline.
