Vatican reaffirms need for reform in LCWR

God bless Archbishop Sartain… he has quite a task ahead of him.

Yes. God bless him.

But…

One of my favorite expressions from medical records is that such and such would be cured by “tincture of time”. Neat way of putting it.

With all due respect to Bp. Sartain, I strongly suspect that the dissidence within many of the religious orders can only be cured by “tincture of time”, their average age being 74 and all.

I don’t know Gus and I’m certainly not attacking him. I reacted to the words which implied that it sure would be nice if catholic schools and hospitals were cheaper because they were staffed by religious.

I was educated for a few years by sisters (just as they were hitting retirement age). It’s no joke that they lived out their vows of poverty. But I also saw how the parish families took them for granted as cheap labor and left them and their order with little to nothing to sustain themselves in retirement.

I stand by my statement: religious give their lives to God, to his service and to his church. They didn’t sign up to subsidise the lifestyles of catholics. Maybe nobody here claimed otherwise, but I’ve sure seen it in real life.

This is very true.

But I didn’t forget. I found the whereabouts of my 8th grade nun and I donate to their order every Christmas.

It seems to me that the media had some mythological view of Jesuits, that, perhaps because some have dissented historically, that this Jesuit Pope would therefore overturn dogmas the secular media loathes, thus leading to the destruction of the Church. I suppose some of them may have been naïve enough to think dogmatic overturn was possible. But part of me cynically suspects many of them know better but seek to drive a wedge into the Church, and between her members.

If the nuns had hoped that Francis would undo what Benedict had done, the press release by the Doctrine of the Faith must have been a great disappointment.*** And Sister Maureen Fiedler, of the Congregation of the Sisters of Loreto, echoes it on the “National Catholic Reporter” arguing that the Pope is not well informed***. Sister Maureen anchors “Interfaith voices” a radio program broadcasted on 62 radio stations, and, as it is written in her biography, "she has been involved in interfaith activities for more than three decades as an active participant in coalitions working for social justice, racial and gender equality, and peace.

“I am frankly very sceptical of that information.” writes Sister Maureen, referring to the note by Prefect Müller. “First, I doubt this issue is on the top of the new Pope’s agenda or that he had much knowledge of this when he was an archbishop in Argentina”. The nun clearly puts the good faith of the Prefect into question: "It could be a case of U]the 'good ‘ole boys’ in the Curia wanting everything to remain the same and trying to make the new Pope go along on an issue about which he knows little".

In reality Müller has been in the Curia only since July 2012 …but Sister Maureen’s suggestion is that a group of leaders from the LCWR should seek a private audience with Pope Francis “to explain the full story.”

The behavior of some of the leadership of the LCWR is appauling to say the least. It’s almost getting to be a constant in your face “No way, we will not obey, to hell with you” attitude that comes forth from them at every turn. They need to be dealt with firmly, and I mean soon! If you look at their blogs and other websites, it becomes crystal clear that they have many, many supporters that believe that they’re being picked on by "the 'good 'ole boys" and that’s troubling. They’re (LCWR) causing division and confusion in the faithful and that’s never good. It appears they completely ignore Church authority. He {Cardinal William Levada] offered as an example specific passages of Sr. Laurie Brink’s address about some Religious “moving beyond the Church” or even beyond Jesus. This is a challenge not only to core Catholic beliefs; such a rejection of faith is also a serious source of scandal and is incompatible with religious life. Such unacceptable positions routinely go unchallenged by the LCWR

Again, troubling… to say the least!

The whole “good ol boys” moniker can be used as a form of misandry. That may well be the case here since those opposing the bishops seem not to confront the doctrinal critiques actually presented by bishops.
