A small consolation? Not as bad as we used to be?
 
Well, I could’ve posted something else but I make every attempt to keep it PG.

Nevertheless, if you desire to beat a dead horse let’s go for it! There are only 10 Threads rehashing this matter. I’ve seen calls for petitions and foolish letter writing campaigns. I’ve also seen ugly posts calling for Inquisitions and torture. However, this matter isn’t anything NEW. @Shakuhachi posted as much.

So far, all I’m seeing is a blind and “angry mob” that’s being fed by the media. Everyone is grabbing their pitchforks and torches but they don’t know what to do besides being angry.

Ok, so the difference for me is that after the first article about the PA grand jury report (that I read on a different site), I purposely did not read anything else about this because I wanted to read the Vatican response first. I don’t have the same comment context that you do, - so the video seems inappropriate to me.

The outrage is stupid because this is nothing new. I grow tired of seeing Catholics lead by the media and turned into a blood thirsty mob.

At the end of the day, we’re responsible for safeguarding ourselves and our families.

The Holy See encourages continued reform and vigilance at all levels of the Catholic Church, to help ensure the protection of minors and vulnerable adults from harm. The Holy See also wants to underscore the need to comply with the civil law, including mandatory child abuse reporting requirements.

I think it’s more than just a small consolation. What else can we expect at this point? The abuses happened. That is a matter of historical record. We cannot erase or undo those past sins. But we can move forward in the best way possible. That’s what the Church has been doing.

The McCarrick scandal is something a bit different, but even that only came to light now because of the changes the U.S. bishops put in place back in 2002. If you look at Cardinal Dolan’s statement on McCarrick (https://archny.org/cardinalmccarrick), you see that the whole thing followed the protocols that are in place. Once it was reported to the diocese, it was reported to police, investigated, brought to the Safe Environment review board (which is mostly laity) and the results were made public.

It seems to me that things are working as well as can be expected. Human nature being what it is, there may always be incidents of abuse. But the numbers are way down in recent decades. That should be encouraging.

But then also it sometimes takes decades for cases to come to light.
