Vatican says "Yahweh" not to be pronounced

This discussion is going way over my head. Please could someone explain the reason why we are not to pronounce “Yahweh”, simply? Sorry to be so slow.

In respect to keeping with ancient tradition passed from the Jews.
This tradition being that the name of God “YHWH” or “Yahweh” or “Jehovah” (as the Witnesses have wrongly translated it) is unutterable.

The Church is not denouncing private use, it is just no longer going to be allowed to be used during Mass. (Mainly this eliminates certain hymns.)

In summation, out of respect for ancient tradition and the reverence Jews have always had toward the name of God.

That is why, even when written, the Jews would leave out the vowels.
 
OK. Thanks for explaining. I needed to know because I have a degree of say in what hymns are sung. You folks can return to your very cerebral discussion now!

There are members of Judaism, who write God as G-d -
out of their immense respect for His name.

His Name is to be held as sacred.

Jesus of Nazareth said:
‘Our Father, Who art in heaven, may Thy Name be held holy.’
‘hallowed be Thy name.’]

In fact, in Judaism, God is sometimes called HaShem, which means ‘the Name.’

I agree. I think it only applies to public liturgy. It would be fine to read it in private from your Jerusalem Bible or what have you.
 
I was just at evening church a few hours ago and we sang “Yahweh I know you’re near.”

I don’t understand why we can’t say it… as long as it’s said with reverency and used properly.

Because modern society treats almost nothing with reverence. If given time, it will become vulgar.
 
Yeah, coincidently one of the hymns today at mass started with Yaweh…I have a feeling that it might be continued to be used in the liturgy for I can’t help but think that most Catholics aren’t up to speed with what goes on in the Church…If it wasn’t for this and other Catholic sites I woud be clueless too.

Just like the word “God” is so misused these days. It has become so commonplace, even the non-believer uses it. (Never reverently!)

I would prefer that one of the most ancient names for God be so revered that it does not fall on the tongues of blasphemers.

Maybe had we done this with the name of Jesus Christ we believers would not have to cringe every time someone uses His name in vain.

Can anyone point me to an actual document from the Vatican that states this outright? I can’t find anything on the Vatican website. I would love to see what the precise wording is regarding this mandate.

Also, why hasn’t word been sent out to the American clergy about this? My parish hasn’t heard a peep from anyone about this mandate; I read about it in the local Catholic newspaper, and asked our associate pastor about it… He had never heard of this!
 
My Pastor said that the changes will be made in 4 years, I believe.
