South Korean Red Cross volunteers in Suwon, south of Seoul, organise emergency relief kits to be sent to Indonesia for victims of the tsunami, yesterday.

The Vatican, appealing for urgent assistance from world Catholics, said yesterday it had raised $6 million so far in emergency aid following Asia’s tsunami disaster that killed more than 50,000 people.

Members of Church groups like Caritas and Jesuit Refugee Services were also being dispatched to affected countries to reinforce relief efforts, according to Cor Unum, the Vatican organisation that coordinates charity funds.

“Cor Unum… .makes an appeal to the faithful to support the efforts with their generosity,” it said in a statement.
The quake hit over the Christmas weekend, and Pope John Paul on Sunday called for swift international aid to attend to the mounting number of victims - then pegged at only around 3,100. Yesterday the death toll exceeded 59,000.

The UN estimates it will cost billions of dollars to bury the dead, battle disease and recover from the wall of water that battered coastlines in seven countries.

Cor Unum, which means “United Heart”, said three million euros had come from the Italian Episcopal Conference, while another $2 million came from the Italian chapter of the Caritas Christian charity group.
