My dad as well (artillery, Italy, Royal Canadian Army).

What you say is true, however post-traumatic stress syndrome was poorly understood then and many soldiers tried to forget the horrors they endured at the bottom of a bottle.

My wife has had many, many alcoholic vets in her medical practice. Some like my own dad did not go that route, but they did indeed keep the horrors in the cloisters of their hearts. As a kid I would ask my dad a lot of questions about the war but only got very vague, general answers. As an adult I am guessing he didn’t want to relive them by retelling them.
Most of the vets I knew were vague and general about the war. What was called being “shell shocked” or having “battle fatigue” was understood. Trust me. These men had clear objectives, and did what they believed had to be done. There are more people today using alcohol and marijuana and they never served. I don’t want to relive the time I was pulled from my car and had a gun pressed to my head either. You know what? I didn’t feel much fear because the only possibilities were two. The other guy would pull the trigger or not. Nothing vague.

No need to relive that. Being alive and having no bullets flying over your head anymore felt great. That I could tell even as a kid.

Although the pope’s top official for liturgy recently suggested that priests should adopt the ad orientem posture for celebrating Mass beginning in Advent, meaning facing the east, a Vatican spokesman on Monday said that instructions recommending facing the people are not going to change.
That’s great. But if the puppets at Mass are sometimes facing east, I think that should be permitted.

My eyes closed was in response that someone saying that it would sound different. It wouldn’t

For your second point, I think you are confusing what is being debated. We aren’t talking about going back to pre vatican 2 form
Are you a recent Catholic? Because it will sound different don’t you remember??

It will not. What was suggested by Cardinal Sarah would only change the direction. It wouldn’t change any responses, or prayers, etc.

I am late to the game here… but I thought I would share a quick snapshot of a video I got at my Parish where the Priest is facing liturgically east. This was during a sacred music conference where our liturgy and music director explained how the Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form connect in so many ways, and why things are set up certain ways in both.

This was during the Extraordinary form of the Mass, a low Mass with organ, that took place at our Parish which is exclusively Ordinary Form/facing the congregation. It actually ended up working out quite well facing the other direction. Knowing not all Parishes have this luxury of space, though. I just thought I would share!

The word “afraid” speaks to how quickly Rome and the Vatican responded to a simple suggestion from Cardinal Sarah. He was brought in to meet with the Pope, multiple bishops and priests refuted him, and official communiques were made. All with lightning speed for the Vatican.

Now contrast this speed with the reaction you see when some in the Church contradict Church teaching, speak in favor of homosexual acts/relationships, speak in favor of women’s ordination, contradict Church teaching on life.

The speed at which one addresses an issue tells you how important that person views it.
People who contradict Church teachings are not head of dicasteries. As head of the dicastery, his comment was clearly seen as a signal that the Church was changing something; because that is part of how changes are “floated”. And it was not like he just had a personal opinion on the matter; he went further, stating changes could start with Advent. This was more than just a simple opinion; and people who head up important public positions generally know that whatever they say which relates to their position and what group they head, will have every public statement parsed and put under a microscope.

Either the Cardinal did not have experience in how Rome works, or he forgot, or he intended to “stir the pot”. I do not consider it ill will on his part; there are a minority within the hierarchy who do not like some or all of the OF and they are certainly entitled to their opinions. However, that dicastery does not work willy nilly based on the personal opinions of those working there. There are expectations of those who work in the dicasteries, and in particular there are expectations of the head of those dicasteries as to how they speak in public, and the Cardinal has just had a rather abrupt introduction to the protocols.

Thank you for sharing. As you noted, it was during the EF, in which the rubrics were followed.
