Vatican to host AIDS prevention, care conference

The Vatican will host an international conference in May on preventing AIDS and caring for those afflicted with it amid continued confusion over its position concerning condoms as a way to prevent HIV transmission.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers also said Thursday it was working on a set of guidelines for Catholic doctors, nurses and others who care for people with HIV and AIDS.

I’m not quite sure what will be covered at this conference, although one of the purposes seems to be to clarify (yet again) Pope Benedict’s statement in an interview late last year.

Monsignor Jean-Marie Mpendawatu Mate Musivi, undersecretary in the Vatican health office, told reporters Thursday that the Vatican’s position would be explained at the May 28 conference, to which the head of UNAIDS and other prominent AIDS researchers had been invited.

“There is a problem of comprehension, of explaining things well and what the pope really said,” he said.

A more comprehensive explanation or set of guidelines on HIV/AIDS prevention is planned for release this year, although the date has not be set.

Church leaders said a new set of biomedical guidelines will be published later this year, as well as a separate document on AIDS prevention after last year’s controversial remarks by Pope Benedict XVI on the morality of condom use.

The announcement, at a press conference to publicize educational initiatives of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers, did not include a publication date for the AIDS document.
