Vatican to Host Catholic Journalists

VATICAN CITY, AUG. 29, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The Pontifical Council for Social Communications has organized an international conference for the Catholic press to focus on the Church’s use of the Internet and new media.

Archbishop Claudio Celli, president of that dicastery, told Vatican Radio that “the big question at bottom is always this: in today’s social context, in today’s Church, what role will a Catholic radio station play, a Catholic television channel? The same question can be asked about the [Catholic] press.”

“And the topic of the congress regards not only the Catholic press,” he explained, “but the Catholic press in the digital age, because everyone already knows that there are many more who read a newspaper – Catholic or not – via the internet than who buy a copy of the newspaper.”

The conference is scheduled for Oct. 4-7.

Bishops’ conferences have been asked to appoint three delegates from their countries, two experts from the press and one an expert in technologies.

“I can tell you,” Archbishop Celli affirmed, “that so far, the response has been very positive. As of today we have confirmation from 58 countries with the presence of about 180 representatives.”

He suggested that such a response indicates the importance members of the Church are giving to the issue of media

Here are the topics which will be discussed, by the panels and by the workshops afterward. The panels will not run concurrently, so delegates will be able to attend each one.
  1. The Future of the Press: Challenges and Opportunities.
    and
    The Catholic Press: Global Challenges
After those two panels, delegates will gather in continental groups to discuss present state of Catholic Press and future possibilities.
  1. The Catholic Press: Expectations and Hopes
After which the delegates will again break into continental groups. They will discuss how the Catholic Press is contributing to the Public Forum? To the “diaconate of culture”? To the life of the Church?
  1. Ecclesial Communion and Controversies. Freedom of Expression and the Truth of the Church.
After this presentation, delegates will break into language groups. They will discuss if the Catholic Press should avoid certain topics? How should it speak of controversial issues? Should it give a voice to dissent?
  1. Catholic Press and the Internet
Delegates will then discuss what are the opportunities offered by new media? How can Catholic Press help Church to be effectively present in digital age? What are the challenges?
  1. Internet Initiatives. Structures and Needs – Meeting the global demands
Delegates will then discuss how we can we work together? What would be helpful to support your work? What resources might we share?
