WASHINGTON (CNS) – The Holy See is working through nongovernmental channels to bring U.S. and Russian negotiators together to discuss new reductions in the countries’ nuclear weapons arsenals, an official with the Vatican’s Dicastery for Integral Human Development said during a visit to The Catholic University of America.

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi explained Jan. 30 during a program at the school that the effort involves “a small group of Russian and American experts.”

“There is the backing of the church, the Vatican. It is promoted on the organizational level by (the nongovernmental organization) Global Priorities,” the archbishop said.

The Archbishop stated that unilateral nuclear disarmament by the USA would result in “destabilization” and risk “complete destruction.” On the contrary, with only one nuclear superpower the world would be much more stable. It might not be the kind of stability that we in the USA (or the Archbishop) would prefer, but it would be a much safer world.

In my opinion, the Archbishop does not understand that, on its present course with two nuclear superpowers, the world will inevitably have to endure a global nuclear war. I applaud the Church’s efforts to persuade the two nuclear superpowers to reduce their numbers of deployed nuclear warheads, but I fear that this action will not be enough to prevent the coming global nuclear war.

I would recommend that the Church prohibit its members from either designing, building, or deploying any kind of nuclear weapon. Nuclear disarmament, including unilateral, ought to become the Church’s number one priority, and we ought to be required to vote for political candidates that support this agenda.
