Hi. I’m writing from Canada.
I often get disturbed at Mass when I hear scripture readings that have been changed. (IE ‘inclusive language’)
I have a dim memory of reading that the Vatican didn’t approve of the translation used in the Canadian church. Is this my poor memory or is there some truth to this?

The Canadian Lectionary uses the New Revised Standard Version translation (NRSV), not the NAB. The CCCB published its Lectionaries after the USCCB had been given permission to use the NRSV. Unfortunately, by the time the Lectionaries came into use, Rome had rescinded permission for use of the NRSV in liturgy. The CCCB was given 5 years to come up with a new Lectionary.

It’s been 18 years but Rome & the CCCB came to an agreement on a new translation earlier this year. It’s a sort of Revised NRSV which was due to be used starting November 30, 1st Sunday in Advent. It includes a lot less inclusive language but they compromised on the quality of the English to avoid using his/her anywhere.

The readings in the new Missals and Missalettes used in Canada are from the new translation but due to a glitch of some kind in the printing process, the Lectionaries themselves are not ready. They should be available for order early in the new year.

I recall seeing in the missalettes the resumption of the phrase “Hail, full of grace” in the angelic salutation to Mary in the Annunciation, the replacement of “father David” for “ancestor David” as well as “sons” in place of “children” in St Paul’s letter to the Galatians.

It sounds like the translations that y’all are using sound a lot better than what we have down south of you. Phemie, are the translations of the Epistles easier to read? When I have had to proclaim them, they have sentences that run many lines. I often have to refer to my trusty D-R or my RSV-CE 2nd edition to see where the sentences break. Those Epistles can be a challenge if I don’t do this beforehand.
