The Vatican chose not to respond.

Personally I think it is a hoax.

Last year in my area the TV people showed the face of the Virgin de Guadalupe as it appeared in the rust on a car door in a junker behind a farm house.

The first one… I had no idea that the face on Veronica’s cloth is strikingly similar to the one on the shroud. Certainly adds more in favor of their authenticity.
