Veil of Veronica relic

I am a fervent devotee of the Holy Face of Our Lord, and for private devotion, I have been looking for one of the Veil of Veronica relics which used to be made each year aprox. 1849 - early 1900’s on Passion Sunday in Rome.
Here is some information about it, with a link to a webpage with information and pictures of what I mean:

*These relics are images that were actually created and touched to Veronica’s veil in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. From what we’ve been able to gather, since the miracle in 1849 in the Vatican, where Veronica’s veil became very vivid and glowed in front of all present while on display, it became a custom in the Vatican to display Veronica’s veil every year afterward on Passion Sunday for veneration to the public. Each year, effigies/drawings were created of Veronica’s veil (usually about 15" x 12"), then touched to the original veil, to a relic of the true cross, and to the spear that pierced Christ’s side. From there, a text description was placed at the bottom (or on the back) of the relic, and the Pope imprinted a wax seal on each. At some point thereafter, the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face in Tours added their stamp to the relic, and from there the relics were sent abroad. From what we’ve been able to gather, this practice was continued for about 50 years. *

As I said, I am searching and searching for one, but don’t know what to do. I wrote to the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face in Tours, France, but they don’t seem to know. Of course there are several on Ebay, but we cannot commit simony in obtaining a Holy Relic for devotion.

There is nothing in Scared Scripture or Sacred Tradition about a veil of Veronica. Nobody knows if that is true or not.

In fact, the name “Veronica” means “true image,” which seems kind of after-the-fact. One theory I read was that for many years, what we now know as the Holy Shroud was folded and displayed in such a way that only the face was seen (people being unaware that it was a whole Shroud), and thus thought to be the veil of Veronica. Not sure how well-founded this theory is.

You are correct, the woman who wiped Jesus’ face was not named Veronica but Seraphia. Somehow with time, the image on the veil was named in latin “Vera icon” which means “true image” as Tarpeian noted. From here one can see how the name of the woman evolved from Seraphia into “Veronica”.

I found this information in the book by Joan Carroll Cruz titled “Relics” on pages 55-57.

Were you able to find where you can obtain a relic legitimately? I have recently discovered the Holy Face Devotion through reading the Golden Arrow and Holy Man of Tours. Great reads and a worthwhile devotion blessed by the Pope.

You may want to look up the Holy Face of Manepello in Italy. It is the image of a man’s face on what they call sea silk. It is very thin. It had originally been in Rome,but during the Sack of Rome disappeared,and later turned up in Manepello.
