I am interested in buying a veil for the masses and visitations of Jesus in the church. The only issue is if i am even able to veil myself before the Lord. I know he would prefer me to, but I am NOTt a virgin therefore am I allowed to wear the pure color of white? I am in a holy and pure state now. Is black just for married woman? I am clueless when it comes to if I can and what color I should buy. Should i wear an off white?
Clueless…🤷

Thank you,
Natasha

I don’t think the color rule applies, really. I am a virgin and wear a black mantilla. Most of the young unmarried women I see wear black as well. If people still go by that rule (I don’t think they do) I’d probably buy a white one, though!

There is no obligation for a woman to wear any kind of head covering in Church so you can wear whatever colour you wish.

The only issue is if i am even able to veil myself before the Lord. I know he would prefer me to,

How do you know? The Church He founded decided that women no longer needed to wear a head covering. “He who hears you hears Me.”

Welcome Natasha! I hope we did not loose you when the forum shut down for a bit! 😦

I am married and I prefer to wear dark color chapel veils - but it certainly is personal preference. There are older ladies in our parish who have lighter or gray hair, they are clearly married, and they wear light colors such as pink and ivory, or light blue.

What ever makes you comfortable and does not interfere with your true purpose in covering your head in the first place.

Thanks so much for your help. I am buying one soon. I am starting a movement at my church. While attending orthodox churches, I have felt the holy spirit calling me to cover my hair.

Good for you!! God bless you in this calling!

I have a very beautiful veil I purchased from a seller on eBay: Catholic Traditions

I bought the large black lace veil and I really love it!!

When was that decided? 1917 Code of Canon Law, Canon 1262 states that women while must cover their heads, “especially when they approach the holy table.” In fact, the tradition of veiling extends back to Biblical times, as St. Paul wrote about it.

This is significantly off topic, and has been discussion a million times on this forum. I suggest you do a search for your answers. 🙂

The canon law was all the hype when a priest was questioned and misinterpreted in regards to the veils. Our church strongly encourages it because God proposed it. And even John, his apostle told us to. unfortunately, the feminist movement and the canon law not saying we have to wear it has caused woman to take their veils off over night. Truth is that we should…it is a deep sign of respect to the presence of Jesus. I find the disrespect similar to men wearing baseball hats and woman dressing provactice or chewing gum. It is a personal choice, but a true sign of respect that we all should commit.

I’m sorry for any confusion caused but it was meant more as a rhetorical question. Furthermore, it wasn’t meant to be off topic as it was a direct response to yinekka’s comments.

Not a problem, but here on CA this is a VERY contentious topic at times, and some of us try to nip it in the bud as it were before that happens.

It is indeed off topic from the OP, which sets the tone and topic for the discussion. 🙂

No harm done. 🙂 There are more than enough discussions out there that will give you more than you EVER wanted to know about canon law on this subject! 😉 Just use the Google search function, they are quite easy to find.

Where did John say to veil?

I think he meant Paul.

Though it is not required right now, it is a good and holy thing to do. We should always encourage people to do good things and not seek to discourage people doing good.

virginity has nothing to do with it
where whatever you like on your head at Mass
the Church has no teaching on this and no law that is currently inforce.
do definitely submit anything you hear “as a voice from God” to your confessor or spiritual director for discernment

I have never heard of any meaning of color attributed to a veil. That being said, I always find a certain beauty in women who wear their veils. 🙂

I don’t think any given color meant or signified anything, but protocol would be that a married woman would not wear a white veil on her head. Just as a widowed woman, for a subsequent marriage, would not wear white. From a social/fashion perspective it just wouldn’t be the proper thing to do. 🙂

These types of social protocols really don’t apply any more, so I think it’s pretty much irrelevant what color a woman wears today. 🙂

Hi Lizaanne,
Could you please enlighten me, a new convert, as to why the subject of covering is a “contentious” issue?
I really have no idea why covering ones head, or discussing it would be contentious?

I want to cover my head, mostly because of the “angels” mentioned by Paul in corinthians. But to be honest, I am afraid because no one covers their head at my church.

I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb, but I really do worry that I’m not being respectful enough of the angels.🙂

Hi Natasha,
Your question is sincere as mine was. I hope they don’t close your thread because other people here are sick of listening to people ask questions about veils. Not everyone is tolerant of this matter discussed in Corinthians.

Why do you think the Lord would prefer you to wear a veil? I’m just curious. Some people like myself feel that way too. I feel like I should have my head covered and I can’t help that I feel that way. Even though I do like to follow the crowd so I haven’t worn one yet.

I applaud all those who have the courage to go against the grain if their conscience tells them it is better.🙂

Hi Lizaanne,
Could you please enlighten me, a new convert, as to why the subject of covering is a “contentious” issue?
Sure! 🙂

It all comes down to how people understand Canon Law - some believe the old law that mandated that a woman must cover her head was abrogated (made void) when the new Canon Law was issued in 1983 (I think that is the right date). It just was not included, not mentioned at all. So some folks think that means (based on supporting documentation) that the new law abrogates the old law.

Then there are other folks who feel very strongly that the old law to cover one’s head is still in effect because it was not specifically stated that it is no longer a requirement.

This has led to many hot and heavy disagreements over Canon Law, what a woman should and shouldn’t do, what we are required to do, what we are called to do - blah blah blah. 🙂

HOWEVER - don’t EVER let any of this change your mind about what YOU feel called to do!!!

Just because someone else has an issue with it does not mean that THEIR opinion should impact how YOU respond to your desire to cover your head. If YOU think this is important, then do it. You don’t need to make excuses to anyone on this forum for your actions, you are not accountable to anyone here. Same goes with fellow parishoners. Don’t let them dictate how you show respect and devotion to God.

I am pretty much the only one covering my head when we go to our neighborhood parish. At the parish we actually belong to, I’m one of many many women who do so. I don’t particularly care if someone has an issue with it - it is important to me and my husband, and that’s all that matters to me. 😃

Hope this helps!!! And welcome to the Fullness of Truth in the Catholic Church!!! 👍
