Veiling question

I try to attend the Latin Mass. I understand that veiling is not a requirement, but it is something that I would like to do. Where would I typically veil in church? Should I wear a veil whenever I am in the sanctuary, or only at certain times/occasions? I see some women who veil for the entire Mass and others who do not veil until the Consecration through reception of Holy Communion, or for private prayers after Mass. I assume that I do not need to wear a headcovering in the vestibule. What about if I am in the sacristy? Thanks.

The same for me. At times I do arrive at church with my veil on because I sometimes veil outside church—if not I put it on prior to entering the Nave.

Thank you for veiling. I’ve been veiling since 2009 and I just love it. I keep my veil on during the entire Mass. The idea of veiling only for the Consecration seems weird to me. You can veil in your car or in the foyer of the church. Sometimes in winter I veil in the nave since I’m wearing a winter hat-I just do a quick switch when taking off my coat.

When I am wearing a hat, I just leave it as is. In the past, hats were considered acceptable as head-covering. In some times and places, they were more common than veils.

The idea of veiling only for the Consecration seems weird to me.

I occasionally attend a Chaldean Catholic church. Many women wear veils, but certainly not the majority. When it comes time for Communion, however, every single woman and girl puts on a veil, and wears it to receive Holy Communion. There are even baskets full of veils to borrow, placed in the first or second pew, so that you can grab one and put in on while in line.

Both approaches make sense to me: covering one’s head out of respect for the presence of the Eucharist, and covering one’s head because you have become a living tabernacle, a home for Jesus in the Eucharist. Both are beautiful customs.

I’m in RCIA and just recently started attending a Catholic Church but I’ve been headcovering for about 6 months or so.

I used to headcover full time but now I only do it during Mass unless I just feel the need to do it at other times.
I wrap with a scarf and then I unwrap in the bathroom before my RCIA meeting. I do so in the bathroom because it feels like I’m actually undressing so I do not want to do that with other people around.

My veil is on before I walk into Church and doesn’t come off until I get in the car after Mass. I wouldn’t think of being in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament without it. But that’s just me. Other women are different. Of course, if I happen to not have my veil with me, it wouldn’t stop me from making a visit to the Blessed Sacrament should I be passing by our parish church or any other church, even without a veil.

Yes I’m aware of that. I prefer to wear a veil because they cover more of my hair. I also like to match my veil and outfit to the mood of the liturgical season.

I suppose I could unveil for the enrollment and then veil before passing through the sanctuary again. (Maybe I am over-thinking this. )

I would not feel a need to veil in the sacristy itself, but I would probably leave my veil on if I were passing through the sanctuary to get there.

I normally attend the Novus Ordo Mass, but I veil anyway, despite the fact that I’m usually the only woman doing so. Normally I put mine on just before going inside the church and take it off right after I get out of the door.

I cover before entering until I get home. I wear a Kippot (Jewish head covering) at the present (it is very comfortable and easy to wear) but I have a new Mantilla ordered – had a beautiful one that I lost in Katrina and I’ve taken a long time to find something close to it. I am one of two who cover – we have a 97 year old who I have never seen step in church without her head covered. I am hoping one day others will join us. As to color I guess matching your outfit is okay – I have a white and a black Kippot which I wear according to seasons but actually it is my understanding in the Catholic church white is for unmarried and black for married. I use to wear a hat when I was a teenager and would be happy to do so again if I could find something nice.

I don’t wear a veil but…

There are many at our parish that do. And most, if not all, seem to put their veil on as they are walking in the hallway to the Nave.

Those that wear hats generally already have them on when they walk into the building.

I have a new Mantilla ordered – had a beautiful one that I lost in Katrina and I’ve taken a long time to find something close to it.

I’m sorry, I imagine that you must have lost many other things, too! I have retired friends who moved to Mississippi less than a year before the storm; they and their horses and housepets survived, but they had to start over again (in a state with less weather).

Thank you for veiling during the OF Mass. I have been wanting to do this for a while. My pastor (and ultimate boss) encourages it, but the church secretary (and my immediate supervisor) is adamant that I do nothing during Mass that would set me apart from the rest of the congregation and were I to veil I would be the only one doing so. Even the pastor hesitates to cross her What to do, what to do. Maybe I should wear a hat instead, although I’d never get away with that in the summertime.

I do always veil at Adoration and whenever I attend an EF Mass (about once a month). At Adoration, I veil at Exposition and unveil at Repose. If I’m going to a place where the Adoration is perpetual, I veil prior to entering the chapel and unveil when I leave it. At the EF Mass, I veil before entering the nave and unveil after leaving it.

Keeping in mind that my primary parish is OF, I am the principal sacristan and I do not veil in the sacristy.

I first felt drawn to head-covering while I still attended the OF exclusively. My husband objected to me drawing attention to myself. I found there were other ways to cover without a mantilla that did not stand out. A scarf or beret, if it matches your clothes, is not likely to draw attention. And there are summer hats as well as winter ones that would look normal. It can be done.
