I have spent some time going back and forth on whether I would be comfortable covering in church. I came to the decision to cover every time I enter a church, but to choose coverings that are not very noticeable. I have mantillas that are pretty big, large enough to cover all of my hair, they are triangular and lace. One is purple (my favorite), the other one is brownish black. I tie them on the back of my head under my hair, and let the lace cover my hair completely. That way I’m covered, but the colors blend with my dark hair and all of the material is on my back, so no heads turn in my direction. Here in the tri-state area it’s hard to surprise anyone with anything. I’ve seen a few curious looks from kids, but other than that - no reaction whatsoever.
I think that it’s appropriate to cover every time we’re inside the church building.
There is no reason to be embarrassed of covering. It is a tradition familiar to all Christians, even though not all follow it. However, when choosing the covering, it would be wise of a lady to consider what covering would be most appropriate for her parish. The big snow-white lace mantillas look fantastic on mannequins online, but if I walk into my church like that, people will ask me where is the groom.
It’s only scary the first two or three times. Then, you get totally used to it.
