Veiling today - some questions

I have spent some time going back and forth on whether I would be comfortable covering in church. I came to the decision to cover every time I enter a church, but to choose coverings that are not very noticeable. I have mantillas that are pretty big, large enough to cover all of my hair, they are triangular and lace. One is purple (my favorite), the other one is brownish black. I tie them on the back of my head under my hair, and let the lace cover my hair completely. That way I’m covered, but the colors blend with my dark hair and all of the material is on my back, so no heads turn in my direction. Here in the tri-state area it’s hard to surprise anyone with anything. I’ve seen a few curious looks from kids, but other than that - no reaction whatsoever.

I think that it’s appropriate to cover every time we’re inside the church building.

There is no reason to be embarrassed of covering. It is a tradition familiar to all Christians, even though not all follow it. However, when choosing the covering, it would be wise of a lady to consider what covering would be most appropriate for her parish. The big snow-white lace mantillas look fantastic on mannequins online, but if I walk into my church like that, people will ask me where is the groom.😃

It’s only scary the first two or three times. Then, you get totally used to it.

Nadege, that’s very encouraging. I have bought a black beret that I plan to wear to NO. It will probably not draw much attention. I’ll leave the black lace for TLM 😃

And also you know what I’m thinking? Once you decide to cover - it’s not about the opinions of others anymore. Just like women who wear their ethnic dress, or Muslim women who cover, or even nuns in their habits - every time they walk out of their house, they know they look different. They know some thought is passing through somebody’s head. And so what? It doesn’t matter. This is me - an Indian, or a Muslim, or a nun, or whatever. In my case, this is me, a woman who covers in church. End of story.

So somebody will think “oh, she’s got a head covering on.” So what? If I let that bother me, this means that somewhere deep inside I agree that what I’m doing is inappropriate. That’s where the problem is! We need to eradicate that thinking. Let’s enjoy wearing our head coverings, the ones we chose and like and are comfortable in. As long as we’re not putting on an obvious fashion show, or acting uppity towards others - there shouldn’t be any issue at all.

I very rarely attend NO masses, but when I do I always wear my mantilla. I don’t feel right going into church without it, even to pray. I have had kids in the pews in front of me point and laugh. I think it’s pretty sad that their parents don’t try to educate them on their faith a little more.

I did have an older lady come up to me and tell me she was afraid to wear hers but that if I had the courage to wear mine then she felt she could wear hers as well. I don’t think it takes courage, it is just a mindset for me. Plus I have the support of my husband and sons. 👍

If you feel the calling to wear a headcovering then do it. Don’t let the fear of others reactions stop you. That is the devil trying to stop you from growing with God. Seriously. I had those feelings of “oh my, what will people say?”. I realized that was silly reason to not do something. I don’t live my faith out in the world according to the fear of how i will come off. I live my life according to God’s words and if it rubs people the wrong way then that is their problem and not mine. My time on earth is small compared to eternity in heaven. God’s opinon matters not peoples. I was being called to this and so i need to do it.

With that said it took me over a year to final get the nerve to wear it. I went to a NO mass at one of the larger churches in houston weekly. I was always the only women who wear a veil. I think people totally got use to it. I was the women in the veil on the side chapel 8 rows back. I think people thought i was probaly discerning. Normally the only reaction i would get is when people saw how young i was. (27 at the time) or when a friend would sit behind me and not realize who i was until the kiss of peace.

i now go to an anglican use mass and everyone knows that women veil as there is a wide variety of women wearing a headcovering. From First commuion girls to young adults, mothers and grandmothers. I love the fact that no one things any of us are “werid” but support us in our faith journeys.

I always wear my veil when i am in the presence of Jesus. If i enter a church and the tabanacle is there and Jesus is present then i wear a veil even when waiting in line for confession. Though i take it off while in confession. But i don’t wear it at weddings. i understand that a headcovering is not required so i respect the fact that its a different situation and not everyone agrees with headcoverings so no pont in picking a fight or ruining a friendship over it.
