Veiling...

I am a recent convert to Catholicism (2 years) and even prior, when I was very devoted to the Lord in a mainline Protestant assembly, I often wondered…sometimes aloud, as to the meaning of St. Paul’s message in 1 Corinthians 11:5
**“But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved.” ****I pretty much dismissed it because women didn’t “cover”… of course, some wore hats, and there just wasn’t any firm consensus at to what Paul meant. I knew that Catholic women were required to cover and that the rule was relaxed with Vatican II. **
**I have been told that the document didn’t expressly state such… **
What is the message from St. Paul and what does Vatican II say about this? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Me, I wear a hat. I have extremely short hair,extremely out of need, so I just wear a hat. I onlymade it HOME 6 years ago. Not sure what V2 has to say about it. I also have a couple of veils, usually use in winter. To me just seems respectful. My mother in her days of my growing up all women Baptist or Catholic wore hats or veils and gloves to church,oh and always a dress. So foir me cover for my head is the norm. After all we are coming to Heaven come down to earth, Jesus is Here. He has come to feed us with His Body Word and Flesh. Awesome HOLY:bowdown:

Thank you for you reply… I too remember when women wore hats (Catholics the mantilla). I’m wondering if there are cultural shifts that have allowed the dispersion of this etiquette.

I too am not sure what is going on in this passage. I heard one possible explaination that it could be something with an old tradition at the time. I don’t know, but if I had to really guess, it had something to do with Acts of the apostles where when they were being commissioned they shaved their heads and fasted.

I think the idea comes from that in Paul’s day prostitutes would wear their hair uncovered in public - and I’m guessing pagan priestesses would too.

Obviously Paul wouldn’t want the women in his congregations to be emulating the example of such women. Any more than we today want women in our churches to wear indecently short or tight-fitting clothing, or anyone to dopt any blatanly paganistic behaviour (substituting ‘Zeus’ for ‘Our Father’ or ‘Buddha’ for ‘Jesus’, for example).
