If you feel called to cover your head in church, any method of doing so - veils, hats, scarves, etc.- is perfectly acceptable for doing so. I would start now. Even if you are still in RCIA, the Mass is still the Mass and your faith in the Eucharist is still the same. If you wish to cover your head out of respect for Christ in the Eucharist, there is no reason to wait. It is a beautiful tradition.

It’s a good time of year to start. Nobody looks at you funny for having a cold head in the wintertime.

Do what you feel called to do. If you do veil, you may encourage other women to do so. I have heard more than one woman say she would veil if she could get others to do so.

I wear an infinity chapel veil when I attend the EF. You don’t have to be a Catholic to wear one. The infinity type of veil is really nice because it looks like a scarf, but you can just pull it over your head before you enter church, or after you sit down in the pew for Mass.

If you know that veiling is right, does that mean that not veiling is wrong?

I like infinity scarves.

I’d love to be able to veil 🙂 I believe infinity scarves would be okay, but keep in mind that there are many website stores where you can get headcoverings made specifically for those who want to wear one to church. Of course getting one of those is not required, it’s just nice to see that there are many options.

Make sure you’re ready to wear one; you must be wearing a veil on your heart before you veil your head, as they say

Maybe its just me, but I find “I know veiling is right,” as having the potential to be troubling. When you claim you know it to be right, you implicitly claim that not veiling is wrong.

There is no doctrine or dogma that can support or deny the claim of whether veiling is right, or wrong.

If you want to, do so by all means. But if you view your decision to do so as more righteous than women who prefer not to, you have an issue with humility you might want to reflect on.

Peace and all good!

Also, “veiling” is not actually a concept in Catholicism. With the possible exception of religious sisters. If you desire to cover your head, you may choose to do so with anything you’d like: a scarf, a mantilla, hat, a bandana, or, if you really want to be authentic, a Kleenex. 😉

However, as has been already mentioned, while head covering might be right for you, it is not right for everyone, and is certainly not a requirement of the Church.

I don’t understand why folks here get so defensive about veiling. The woman isn’t even Catholic yet, and thinks that veiling is right, but she hasn’t put in the necessary qualifier that “It’s right for me, but I don’t judge anyone else,” that some here expect. It’s very judgmental to be so defensive about veiling.

I looked at Becky’s posting history, and she’s one of the most humble and least contentious posters among us. I think that veiling is right, too. Ya’ll should pick on someone your own size, like me.

Is there a reason for being equally as defensive from the other prespective? And why look for a fight? I wasn’t picking on her, and regardless of your size, I have do desire to no battle with you…take a deep breath and relax!

You can veil if you want to and you don’t have to veil if you don’t. I wear a headcovering some weeks, others I don’t really bother. You can use whatever you want as long as it looks clean and respectable. In my opinion, infinity scarves look very nice, especially if they are made of a good color and material. Do whatever you’re comfortable and happy doing, and don’t feel rushed. You can start immediately, next week, next month, whenever you want to.

Veiling is not Catholic? LOL
I guess Holy Mother Church was wrong in making veiling a requirement for women with Canon 1262 in 1917.

“Veiling” or “covering one’s head”? I think many women hate the term “veiling”. Even we who grew up having to cover our heads each time we stepped into the church have a problem with a loaded word we never heard when we HAD to cover our heads.

sounds about right… that time period in the Church is know to have been very focused on minute details and imposing rubrics

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why threads on “veiling” get closed down. Someone mentions “veiling” and people get defensive about those who wear them, those who don’t wear them and those who just don’t care what, if anything, is worn on a head. Then you have those that have no understanding of canon law and think just because something isn’t included in a new code, means you still have to do it. (If it’s not in the most recent code, you are under no obligation to do whatever it is, but you are free to wear that piece of fabric in any which way you see fit). More come out of the woodwork to ask for blessings for those who do “veil”, leaving those who do not to wonder why they are left from an individual’s blessing on a group of those that now appear to be “holier than thou”…anyone else see where all of this leads? Right into a moderator locking the thread. And it can’t come soon enough!
