Veils.

This thread was highjacked from its true purpose: Getting Jacafamala head gear. There are plenty of other threads to debate this, more’s the pity.

Veils are not required, even at a TLM. But they can make women feel more comfortable in a sea of them.

The traditional rule was a HEAD COVERING, not a veil. The lacey doily thing was not big until Jackie Kennedy made it popular. There was debate in some circles as to whether a mantilla or chiffon scarf was sufficient to meet the requirements back in the day, BTW. The mantilla as currently represented, and the ones in countries of hispanic origin, are two different things entirely.

**If you, Jacafamala, **feel more comfortable at a TLM in a hat, scarf, babuska, etc., you are free to find any of those, and not go out and purchase a mantilla for a one-time shot.

For the others: Cameron Lansing is a canon lawyer of some consequence, not just some poster, not just an apologist. You might think you’re right, but let me tell you- he KNOWS his business. He IS right 99.99% of the time.

QUESTION: Aren’t chapels a term used by the SSPX, in the sense of group, instead of parish?
Amen, amen. But I knew this would happen.

At the TLM that I assist at they ARE required. So that is not a truth.

Perhaps veils can make women feel more comfortable in a sea OF them, but the point you forgot to make is how pleasing it is for Our Lord when a woman pays Him due honor by humbly covering her head.

I don’t know that veils are required…just that there has to be a cover on your head. whether you wear a ‘veil’/'mantilla doesn’t matter. You can wear a hat or a scarf. A hanky will even do. I remember once I didn’t have a cover and my father loaned me his hanky (clean one 😉 ). And it was perfectly acceptable.

Of course you are correct, a hat or scarf are acceptable and in an emergency using a hankerchief is perfectly understandable, but had you been at my chapel, there is a basket of veils in the vestibule for those who have forgotten or come unprepared.

Yes I agree and the TLM’s in my state have the same practice. But that they are veils is not necessary they could just as easily be hankies in the basket or scarves.

FWIW, Ed Peters’ position is that the 1983 Code of Canon Law abrogates the 1917 one. Mr. Peters is a respected canon lawyer so my inclination is to defer to his judgement, given that he’s more learned regarding canon law than I.

Just my $.02.

That’s true but if one is going to go to all the trouble of putting something in a basket, it may as well be veils!

So, should I make a white veil or a black veil?

I’m leanig towards black, as it would go best with my dowdy black linen jumper.

But married women can wear white, correct? What’s the color code rule of thunb here? Anyone know?

I don’t think there is one (color code rule) just whatever you prefer. I like black myself. Off white is nice as well, if you can find them.

I have heard that white is for unmarried women and black is for married women, but I don’t think that most people follow that any more. There have been women with navy blue and ivory, and I’ve seen gold too, which is very pretty. A friend of mine often wears her mother’s very old mantilla which is mainly black with ivory and turquoise flowers on it. So I would say to just go with what will work best for you! 👍

(Sorry I didn’t respond earlier, I’ve not been online all weekend.) 😊
