Veneration of Elijah and prayer ropes

I was wondering if it is acceptable to venerate Elijah as the Orthodox do. We know he was assumed Body and soul into heaven. Does that mean I can have a devotion to him? (I only ask because I bought a beautiful bundle of Icons for my prayer room and one of them is Elijah.)

Also, the Eastern Orthodox have a tradition called the Prayer rope which they use to pray the “Jesus Prayer” “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Is this common at all in Catholicism? Would it be inappropriate to have a priest bless an eastern prayer rope for me?

The Eastern Catholics, and in my experience the Byzantines-because of my exposure to them, honor all of the Old Testament Saints. So, by all means venerate St. Elias.

As far as the prayer rope, have your local priest bless it, he can do it.

Absolutely! The Catholic Church celebrates his feast day on July 20th.

Don’t the Carmelites have a devotion of sorts to Elijah? I’m always getting Elijah and Elisha mixed up. I also believe that there are Catholics who say that prayer and call it an expletive prayer. I could be wrong. I just remember a guy telling me once the nuns said while you wait in the lunch line you say that prayer, no trouble-making. It probably makes you look batty if you say it aloud repeatedly though.

**Nothing “of sorts” about it.

They commemorate these holy prophets on their calendar on the same dates that Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic do: 14 June for Elisha and 20 July for Elijah. And they are commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on these same dates.

There’s a Maronite Church in my hometown named St. Elias after the prophet.**

Eastern Catholics use the chotki or kombouskhini too.

From what my third order Carmelite friend told me, I am aware that the Carmelites honor “Holy Father Elijah” and I think they have to fast on the eve of his feast.

Yes, he (along with other prophets) is listed in the Martyrology and also features with other Old Testament figures in various Proper Calendars (the Carmelites, as has been mentioned, and also the Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem)

“Catholic” includes the Eastern Catholics who do have such a tradition.If you are asking about Latin Catholics, the prayer is indulgenced. Prayer ropes are used, but a priest can certainly bless yours using the general blessing for religious objects.
