Veneration of the Crown of Thorns at Notre Dame, on EWTN

Anybody watch this today? It was on this morning and I am watching the rebroadcast. They have an excellent violinist and the meditations are very moving, plus just the fact that Notre Dame is still standing and looking not too bad in the footage and with people worshipping in it, is pretty mindblowing.

The non-clergy participants are in some kind of protective suits and boots which just adds to the surrealness of it all.

Are people allowed in it?

I watched a video a few months ago of the Archbishop celebrating Mass with a few select priests and lay faithful present, and all had to wear hard hats.

Apparently the handful of people including the Archbishop, some clergy, a couple of readers, and the violinist are allowed in. No one is in a hard hat but the lay people are in those protective suits and boots like I said. I see a lot of sections are roped off so I guess they are all confined to the one section that is safe for them to be in.

Here’s some screen caps I took while watching just now

I am sure you will one day.

I spent most of my time there pestering my parents to let me buy something from the gift shop.

As you can imagine, I really regret that now…

EWTN has this up on both Facebook and Youtube now for those who missed it. They don’t translate the opening prayers, but they do translate all the reflections after that, so don’t be put off by just hearing French at the beginning, if you don’t speak French.

(note, if you watch the end at about 40:30 you’ll see an amusing blooper and then a French bird flying past the camera)

(EWTN removed the ending with the blooper from this one)

Yes, I did see it yesterday 👍. I’ve been staying with my mom during this time, and her cable TV normally does not get EWTN. It occurred to me yesterday to check that channel anyway. For whatever reason, perhaps because it’s near Easter and all of the churches are closed, EWTN was unblocked and showing on her TV. I saw much of the Good Friday service from the National Shrine Basilica in Washington, D.C., the veneration of the Crown of the Thorns at Notre Dame, and the Good Friday Liturgy broadcast from Christ Cathedral here in SoCal. This was an unexpected blessing.
