Last Friday, the Venezuelan government declared a new law, one that makes it an actual crime to ‘offend Chavez.’ Chavez of course will say when he is offended. The king decides. And this means bloggers. A new Venezuelan blogger, called Jolly, gives his take here.

**In big bold letters, it proclaims: **

“IT’S OFFICIAL:
VENEZUELA IS A DICTATORSHIP”

*Excuse me… what?! *

Let me tell you, the debauchery of expression here in Venezuela is amazing; this week, I was watching this right wing show called Alo Ciudadano on Globovision – to see what they are up to – and on the show, both the moderator and the guest kept making fun of Chavez, saying he was an authoritarian dictator, that this is a regime, that the Social Responsibility Law goes against freedom of expression, that it is truly a “Gag Law”… and so on and so forth. Since it’s an interactive show, people sent text messages and called in to speak the same lie. Kind of like an echo chamber, where everyone believes their own deceitful fabrication.

**I was about to call in, but the show ended, thus I have no other choice but to clear things up here… especially after that person commented on my weblog and left that toxic link with such a dangerous and FALSE message about Venezuela. **

If we were indeed in a dictatorship, in an authoritarian regime … would there be any shows that made fun of Chavez? Would the media be able to say that they are in fact living in an authoritarian regime?

**Why aren’t Globovision and El Nacional closed? **

**Why aren’t the anchors and moderators in jail? **

Let me tell you something about “authoritarianism” and lack of freedom of expression. During the past 5 years, the only channels that have been shut down here in Venezuela, were Venezuelan Public Television during the 2002 fascist coup, when former Miranda State governor Enrique Mendoza (one of the spokesmen for umbrella opposition coalition Coordinadora Democratica), referred to Venezuelan Public Television (VTV) as “trash” that “should be taken off the air” (later on, he did…), and Catia TV* (community media),* which was shut down by former Caracas mayor Alfredo Pena.

**Yet, both instances were conveniently omitted by the Inter American Press Association (SIP) and Reporters Without Borders on their reports on Venezuela. **

There IS freedom of expression in Venezuela. It is a constitutional right guaranteed to all of those who are living on Venezuelan soil, and I do mean all --not just citizens, since our new immigration laws state that foreigners have the same rights that Venezuelans have under our Bolivarian Constitution.

Some proof of this is all the criticism from the media, the lack of coverage of any of Chavez’ events/tours (which is the reason why our media ministry resorted to a joint network 3-min TV and Radio transmission on the Uruguay-India-Qatar-France official tour every day that Chavez was away), and the overall right-wing bias of the news, which, in typical Venezuelan opposition fashion, blames the government for absolutely everything. Also - two or three opposition marches have occurred this year… the fact that they don’t cover them as much as before because NOBODY goes … well, that might be another thing.

Every single developed country has a media law, and what’s more: the US’ laws are much stricter than our Ley Resorte – For example, who shut down Al Jazeera’s offices, as well as other small newspapers in Iraq during the invasion?

None other than the US government, through the US Army.

So you are siding with Chavez and saying it is OK to pass a law that it is against the law ot offend Chavez?
