Venezuela: UN investigators accuse authorities of crimes against humanity​

United Nations (UN) investigators say Venezuela’s government has “committed egregious violations” amounting to crimes against humanity.

Cases of killings, torture, violence and disappearances were investigated in a fact-finding mission for the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN team said President Nicolás Maduro and other top officials were implicated.

I agree! It has been a heartbreaking 20 year fall for the people of VZ from a vibrant and prosperous democracy to the oppressive regime that they live under now. My DIL is from VZ and she weeps for the beautiful country that she grew up in. My son and DIL were engaged in the fall of 2001. We met with my DIL’s parents that December in Miami. While we discussed and planned for the wedding scheduled for January 2003 what I remember most was her parents plea to pray for VZ. They could forsee the direction VZ was headed. Even then they were making plans to leave VZ and emigrate to the U.S. My DIL already had an Aunt and Uncle living in MD and her parents had intended to move close to family. It took them until 2016 to legally move to the U.S. It was very hard to leave rest of family behind especially their other daughter and her family. The horrors of having to stay and live in fear without even the basic needs of living is overwhelming. Since COVID, the conditions have deteriorated even more and the VZ government has adopted the Chinese practice of forced detention into centers not equipped to care for those who are ill. Everyone considering voting in favor of socialism should be looking at Venezuela and learning the lessons.

And the lesson is that socialism never works.
Not “we can do socialism right.”

Venezuela thought they could do it right too.

There was also a significant South American Narco link with the VZ leaders.
 
That is swell. However, what does it do? I am quite disappointed at the UN for a long time. Why did they accuse authorities in Venezuela now? What about China? There are a lot of other nations as well.
