The verses of the advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” are a reworking of the “greater antiphons” traditionally sung during vespers during the seven evenings preceding Christmas eve. This evening would be the first of the seven. The “Suffering with Joy” blog has a nice description of some small-t traditions for this week and the “O Antiphon” for each day, with commentary.
Fr. Zuhlsdorf also has commentary and meditations on the antiphons which you may enjoy reading.
Friends in Christ, on this Ember Friday, may the Lord of All bless you and prepare you for his coming.
