Why is it important to say the number of times we committ a venial sin during Confession? Since, we don’t really have to confess venial sins it would seem that just mentioning the sin would be enough.
 
While not mandatory regarding venial sins, it is highly recommended to give accurate disclosure in confession. The object is to purify the self. While the sins are remitted, for your own sake, the more you disclose can help tremendously in not repeating a sin, or letting it mature into serious sin.

to indicate if you are forming a habit that could grow into a mortal sin, doing something every day is different than something that is occassional, or doing something everytime you find yourself in a certain situation, could grow into something worse.
 
Telling the priest everything, helps him to give advise, counsel, etc. in the confessional. It can indicate patterns that could lead to serious sin.

Since we sin way more than we think, it is tough to give numbers anyway. Saints have told us how much we offend God, and how little we realize it.

It can be done, but keeping track of every time we speed, lose our temper, think ill of someone, etc, etc. adds up.

Still not a bad habit if you can do it.
 
I don’t usually get into numbers when confessing venial sins. I usually say something like “several times” or “I have been getting in the habit of …”
 
We do not have to say the number of times we committed any venial sins. That requirement is for mortal sins only.
