Venial sins can be forgiven in many ways – use of holy water, prayer for forgiveness, receiving the Eucharist. So if I’m in a state of grace but committed a venial sin and ask for forgiveness from God, is there any point in going to confession afterward to confess that one venial sin? Since it was already forgiven without the need for sacramental confession, what does the absolution actually do in that situation?

The sacrament of Penance gives us sacramental grace and sanctifying grace, despite whether or not we were in a state of grace or mortal sin during reception. It **increases **our graces when in a state of grace and it **removes **eternal punishment (hell) when we are in a state of mortal sin.

In addition, although one does not need to confess venial sins, the more we go to Confession the more we are able to stay away from temptations to such venial sins. It increases our ability to avoid such occasions of sin, even though they are venial. We end up growing spiritually.

There is ALWAYS a benefit of receiving the sacraments and it will never be a waste to go to Confession when we are in a state of grace. Grace upon grace sounds good to me! We can never have too many graces!

Peace.

1458 Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church. Indeed the regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the Spirit. By receiving more frequently through this sacrament the gift of the Father’s mercy, we are spurred to be merciful as he is merciful:

Thank you. Confessing venial sins is great but I’m asking specifically about absolution. For example, let us say I commit three venial sins. Then I repent and receive Communion and those sins are forgiven. If I immediately go to confession afterward to confess the three venial sins that were just forgiven and have committed no other sins, what is being absolved? There are no sins to absolve.
