  • I am 26 and if the way i speak to my parents is disrecpectful is that a mortal sin.
like asking them if they want me to pour them water in there glass and he wont give me a yes or no. he said wait. i get annoyed because he is not giving me a proper answer so i said then i wont give you in a angry tone voice.

i went to show him what i was making and instead he started telling me off. I am making a bird box and i use my dads tools and he got annoyed and starts telling me you dont use this for that you use this which was hiding in a box so i spoke back and told him how am i surpose to know that it is in there. and he tells me make sure you where your safty glasses. and i say I know in a annoying angry voice.

so would these things be just venial. when would such a thing past the line from venial to mortal…

please do not message me if it is grave sin, full knowledge… full consent… i am wanting to know how can you know when speaking back or talking with anger to parents or telling them off for thing will be mortal.

What you describe is a venial sin, not a mortal sin.

A mortal sin has to be so grave as to be incompatible with continuing in the love of God and neighbor, and in the state of grace.

Venial sins are not entirely incompatible with the love of God and neighbor, and the state of grace.

Speaking disrespectfully to parents does not mean that you have turned away from the love of God and neighbor. It is a sin, but is still compatible with continuing to love God and neighbor.

The commandment to honor your parents is difficult to fulfill perfectly, but also not so easy to fail in fulfilling to the extent of a mortal sin. Examples of mortal sins under this commandment: Doing grave harm to parents, Malice toward them (wishing them grave harm), abandonment of them when they are in need and you are able to help them, etc.

All Catholics have an obligation to learn right from wrong, and to know your faith.
On judgement day, you will not be able to say, - I was never taught (when the Church has us with printed information), or some person gave me the wrong information.

Every Catholic home must have a copy of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” revised in accordance with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II, first printed in the US in March of 2000.

If you still have questions about what is mortal sin and what is not,
after reading this Catechism of required dogma on Faith and Morals, contact your Priest in confession.
If he goes against anything in the Catechism, go to another Priest.

The Fourth Commandment is: “Honor your Father and your Mother”, Patience is a virtue.

Much of what I see above has little to do with respect or “honoring” your parents and much more to do with anger, impatience, and selfishness. I see things like “, I get annoyed…”, and “…he started telling me off…” etc. These things have more to do anger that with honor.

Often times these kinds of issues point to deeper issues than just losing one’s temper. If thise kinds of things go on regularly there seems to be a general lack of Christian Charity going on - on both sides.
Of course, since you cannot control how your father speaks to you, the only thing you can do is to foster an attitude of humilty and service and obedience to him as you should. These are the things that Christ wishes us to foster in ourselves. Remember that he who would be greatest must be the servent of the others.
An example would be the thing about the water. What reason did you have to not wait as requested, other than it did not fit with what you (selfishly) desired. How long do you think he wanted you to wait? Could you NOT wait?

This would not preclude your trying to talk to your dad at some point about how he sometimes comes across as harsh or angry etc, when maybe he does not mean to.

In general I suggest that you worry less about whether such a thing is mortal or venial, and work more on improving how you show Christian Love to all, parents included.

Peace
James
