I’m very grateful for the profession I’m in, as it is challenging work and it provides well for my family.

But due to the critical nature of what we do in my department, we have a mandatory rotating on-call schedule. It was my turn this past weekend, and of course at 5:30 am Easter morning, I got a call for a very big issue. Which meant I had to go into the office and was there until the issue was resolved at 12:30 noon.

There was nothing to be done about it, it was a critical problem and had to be dealt with.

It was a very depressing ride home though, passing by all the churches just letting out after their Easter worship. I kept thinking about the music and the service we had to miss and I admit to envy.

Ah well. Maybe next year. 😐

I’ve been in Facility Operations (running boilers and chillers and power plants) for a while and I’ve had similar experiences with major and minor Holy Days. It’s frustrating. The thing I try to do is ask God if there’s something He’s trying to communicate to me I’m not seeing (not saying He’d keep me from an obligation for the sake of a teaching moment). I know He works all things for good so I ask to see the good in that situation. A lot of times when I’ve had to work holidays I’ve been paid double time, and lo and behold the next week something breaks and I’ve got the money to fix it when otherwise it would have been a burden. That’s a blessing. When I was going through RCIA I missed one of the rites because one of my kids was sick and my wife was already at church. When I prayed the Examen at the end of the day I realized how little time I’d been spending with my kids. That realization was an immense grace at the time.

Spare a thought for the firemen here. 2am Easter morning, my neighbours house burns down. And assorted other bushfires over the break.

My neighbour has been left with nothing, but their lives

May the Easter blessing be with you all the same.

Our family had an eventful Easter vigil on Saturday night. As usual by the time it was finished, we were thoroughly beat. Sunday morning (Easter) it was Sunday Morning Coming down, as we took our time to recover and had decent family lunch.

I found out after the fact that I could’ve gone to Easter Mass after all since my friend’s family was out of town. As a result, she was alone and chose to work that day.

Even though I didn’t make it to Easter Mass, it was a good day. My mother made it through Lent and Holy Week without falling. (She fell on Holy Thursday last year and spent that Easter in the hospital and then a month in rehab.)

We didn’t have anything special to eat that day since I’m preparing for surgery and we’re having to use up what we already have. But we were together and thankful for our blessings.

When one counts the blessings in their lives, it keeps things in their proper perspective especially since there are always those who are worse off who should be remembered in prayer.

Well, I would’ve much rather to have been tied up with work than what I went through.

My wife and myself were sick for two weeks. I was antibiotics.

We missed Palm Sunday, the Triduum and Easter services.

Finally feeling better, but God didn’t want us being at Church.

I believe I picked up the virus from serving the cup as EMHC the Saturday before Palm Sunday.

The deacon who also served the cup, asked me to finish his cup when we returned to the altar. I didn’t know why he did that, but now I have my guess.

Jim

Sorry to hear you were so sick. I never use the communal cup. All the good stuff is in the Little White Guest anyway.
Are you implying that the deacon passed his illness on to you on purpose?

Not on purpose and not necessarily where I picked up the virus. Just coincidental on what took place before getting sick.

JIm

Hope you are both well on the way to recovery today, Jim.
