Very old/Ancient Christian churches/monasteries

This thread is for people to discuss like what the subject says, old Christian churches and monasteries not denominations but old places of Christian worship. The locations can be of any Christian denomination but it’s understood the oldest will be of catholic and orthodox nature primarily.

These 2 links show the Mattai monastery. I believe this is the old church I was told about when I was deployed. The monastery has history back to the 300’s. The second link also has other places listed.

Nope the places were off limits unfortunately.
If you see a SGT Frickling or SGT Foxwell at Schoffield tell them Gilbo says hi, if it’s the right SGT they will know who Gilbo is

I visited the monastery St. John the Divine this past summer. It was pretty neat, I’d recommend a visit by everyone, only downside is they don’t let you take pictures inside the monastery proper, still a cool experience.

Not as old as a lot of monasteries (founded in 1088), but still old.

One can visit Saint Catherine’s monastery in in the Sinai of Egypt, providing one has the opportunity to travel there.

There is also a discussion about the icons. One of the strange quirks of history in this case is that the monastery was outside of the empire when iconoclasm erupted. Thus, the monks (as obedient as they were) did not destroy all of the icons, but hid some of them instead.

Interestingly, there is a mosque within the walls. This probably had been forced upon them sometime after the Muslim conquest.
