I made a promise to God with a condition that if I go ahead and commit a certain sin then He can make me disabled as a result. Does a promise like that stand?

No God would never do that to you. God is loving and meriful and understands all our problems.

“Be careful what you ask for.” God does not want to make “deals.” God is a loving Father who would rather take away pain and suffering. Some things happen that will and can be a testament to how we respond to His love, but not because He wants to punish us on earth; We will get enough of that later, don’t you think? Instead pray that you and I and all of us will try to get rid of sins and flaws in ourselves through a deeper spirituality and love of self. We can not love our God unless we love ourselves in a healthy, wholesome way. praying for you.

You need to make an appointment with your pastor as soon as possible to discuss your scrupulosity and these sorts of “promises” you are making to God. These types of compulsions have deeper roots, you need to see a mental health professional as well.

I cannot speak for God. But no, he would never do this, simply because it would not be love. While He might appreciate your zealous devotion, the simple fact is you will fall into sin. Everybody does. The key is to be repentant and to confess and to try and do our best at following His will and becoming more like Christ. He knows you will sin, therefore He would never agree to this, because it would be a guaranteed punishment without chance of repentance. Do not be scrupulous. God loves you, and His mercy is endless. There is a certain pride to asking God to harm you in atonement for your sins, simply because it supposes you will never sin to avoid this punishment, and its extremeness denies the reality of His mercy. The key is to be truly sorry for your sins and to act in humility to atone for them by confessing them. By doing this, you will accept your sinful nature and gain the strength from Christ to overcome it.

God has divine wisdom and He is our loving Father. Would a loving Father punish his very young child by a short " time out", or damage the child He loves for life because the young child “promised”? Pls go to confession and tell the priest your “whole” story. God loves YOU!!!

I would also like to add that this zealousness can be channeled outwards. That is to say, rather than turn it into a mutually agreed punishment with God, you can, along with confession, atone for these sins by charitable acts. But I agree with the above poster about discussing this with your Pastor. He will be more qualified to advise you. Charitable acts should be done from the heart with authentic love for God and your neighbor, and this zealousness might come from a more fearful and self-interested part of the heart that only you, God, your Pastor, or someone who knows you personally can determine and offer advice and help for. May God help you in your faith and in your battle against scrupulousness and fear. May His love and mercy sooth your heart.

I used to be terribly scrupulous.

I was a worried wreck for years and one day I told my family Doctor about all of the things I was doing.

Turns out I was living with a severe anxiety disorder, OCD. It was a very good move on my part to tell my Doctor, as he was immensely helpful and I am no longer wracked with guilt and worry.

Thank you for all the responses.

I will be seeking help from a spiritual director plus I am in the process of being treated for Anxiety by a mental health professional.

My promise was not particularly made out of pride. I guess I made the promise to deter myself from committing a certain sin in future. My fear now is that if I ignored that promise then God will carry out the condition.

Please reassure me. This is getting to me.

God would never hurt you, He loves you and doesn’t want to see you suffering. God is our loving Father and we are His children. I myself have ocd/anxiety it has got a lot worse in recent years but my Catholic faith has helped me. The rosary is powerful and Our Mother always helps us with all our trials.

This is a great read and shows is the extend which Jesus loves us.

NO. God will do what ever he pleases for you and all people. Many of us make promises to God we cannot keep. It’s a great part of our human nature. Now, *I wouldn’t regularly put God to the test *or make promises you don’t intent to fulfill. It then becomes spiritually unhealthy and dangerous to your soul.

It is written of Bl. Egidius of Portugal that he“… entered into an unholy compact with Satan, which he signed with his own blood. For seven years he is said to have studied magic in the caves of Toledo under his infernal master. When he reappeared amongst men, he was found to be endowed with a marvellous power over the elements and able to cure the most inveterate diseases.” And yet we know that everything turned out very well for BLESSED Egidius!

Fortunately, God did not take Egidius at his word; and there is no reason to think that He will treat us any differently. God has no obligation to submit to our will, or to satisfy the conditions of our hastily made resolutions etc. God is all-loving and all-wise. Even if you made a vow, it would be invalidated by the fact that you had not fully understood its implications at the time.

Be at peace. Speak to a priest if you wish to, and remember these consoling words: ‘He who hears you, hears Me.’

St. Gemma Galgani: ‘Jesus said to me often that I should no longer have any will or private judgement; my will should be that of my confessor.’

Jesus to St. Veronica Giuliani: ‘… tell everything to him who holds My place. Be obedient to him; do whatever he commands. You can never be mistaken when you are obedient.’

I would speak to a priest… A priest can even cancel a private promise. Trust in God’s goodness and will, but we need to be careful what we promise 🙂
