Very small ways of stealing?

If I took from a deo spray that I wasn’t sure whose it was, and remembered that the last time I asked it was ok, but I think it was a different one, so I just fogured it would probably be all right to take from it, but I wasn’t sure----would that already be considered stealing?

And if yes, since it’s with the ten commandments, is that now a mortal sin?

What is deo spray? Deodorant spray? Did you take the bottle? Or just a squirt under each arm? I guess either way it’s technically stealing. Would you feel comfortable just saying to the person, “I hope you dont’ mind, I used some of your deodorant.”?. If you can do that, I would, just for damage control. Apologize if necessary and don’t do it again without permission.

Stealing is one of those things that depending on the situation, your knowledge of how grave the situaiton is, and your full consent can be mortal sin. . However, If it wasn’t a huge deal or didn’t cause any great injustice, it’s probably a venial sin.
 
I tend to be so scrupulous I went with the benefit of the doubt and thought it was probably ok…
Because I ahve done it before and the people there had said, no problem.
But I think it was a different bottle. It was standing in the same place though, in the corner of the cupboard.

I think calling the place now and apologizing would be very embarrassing, because they have been telling me not to be so scrupulous…

Yes I just took a squirt under each arm.
And it wasn’t a roll-on of course that would have been unhygienic.

I hope it’s ok if I go to communion tonight.
 
Was this a store? Or a place of employment? Was the bottle for testing?

where we workers store our things.
I am not sure if that one was meant for all.
 
I don’t know that it would be stealing and if it was it certainly is not to the level of a mortal sin. However, it would be called “mooching”, meaning using something of someone else’s to avoid having to pay for your own.

You should stop using other people’s stuff and keep a can of your own spray there to use for yourself.
 
I guess it was just because I was in a hurry to start working and I thought I needed some and it was standing right there… I would have had to dig for mine in my backpack… ANYWAY… I explained the situation to the priest with as much detail as I thought was needed and he said that wouldn’t be a mortal sin. That I could go to communion, but should admit to God that it was wrong to do it and not do it again.

Tomorrow I am planning to go to confession anyway.
 
Wow, Kathrin, you really are scrupulous if you think inadvertently using someone’s deodorant spray is worthy of confession! Now I just feel dirty.
 
It wasn’t really inadvertantly, I was UNSURE if I was allowed to take it or not.
 
Why not buy a deodorant and leave it in the cabinet for anyone to use, marked as such.

Really, though, this could be said to fail the test of whether or not it is actually theft. Paragraph 2408 of the CCC says there is no theft if consent can be presumed or refusal is contrary to reason, which would certainly be the case if you really “needed” some deodorant, if you know what I mean. 😛

Also, it’s way out of balance. If it’s enough to keep you from Communion, it’s enough to send you to hell for all eternity. Two squirts of deodorant? No.
