Very Stupid Question about the Mass

šŸ˜Š I really shouldnā€™t have to ask this, between the existence of google and the obviousness of the question.

Is there some resource online which I can use to help me learn the Mass? I have difficulty with the responses on some of the prayers (I can do the ones from the CBW just fine, but the ā€œroutineā€-seeming ones are problematic). I have a lot of trepedation about going to Mass every week just because I donā€™t seem to know my part.

I asked my priest about it, but he said he didnā€™t know any sort of resource like that, and that it would be easiest to learn the lines through, well, being at mass. (Is exact words included the phrase ā€œsimply by being aliveā€, in a joking way, of course.)

Not a stupid question at all! This page is a pretty good resource, and does a nice job of showing where there are multiple options for various things.

Whenever I attend the OF mass, I always stumble at this part:

I dont know about the states, but the CCCB has approved/been approved for a new translation of the Missal. I think the parish bulletin said it would be adopted for the First Sunday of Advent. (I think thatā€™s the end of November.)

Yes, theyā€™ve finally gotten around to redoing the 1973 English translation of the Mass. The new translation goes into effect this fall ā€“ I think Canada, like the U.S., has ordered the change for the first Sunday of Advent, November 27. The new translation will, of course, be very similar to what weā€™re using now, but itā€™s a ground-up retranslation from the Latin, so there are changes throughout, including to almost all the peopleā€™s parts. As a result, it probably wonā€™t be completely worth your while to commit to memory all the outgoing versions.

He may be referring to the upcoming change in the missal. Of course, a copy of the missal might not be a bad help.

Also, thereā€™s no reason to be overly embarrassed by not knowing the responses well. Iā€™m a cradle Catholic and still mess it up occasionally. Of course, I also get my name wrong when I introduce myself occasionallyā€¦

I donā€™t pretend to know the creed, but thatā€™s just like what? Three sentences?

LOL. I just donā€™t get enough practice because I usually attend the EF.
 
In a wierd way, that almost works for me. I donā€™t really have a problem with a new translation from Latin to English. If everyoneā€™s as confused as me, then it wonā€™t be so bad.

Now, the real question is how many people actually catch on to the changes. Barring some sort of special class to explain them, I canā€™t see it.

Itā€™ll probably just seem really awkward for a couple months or a year, then slide into normality. Hopefully a much improved normality though.
 
May I suggest that you buy the new ā€œCelebrate in Songā€ from the CCCB ā€“ or you could order it from RD MacLean in Moncton or even perhaps be able to pick one up at a local religious goods store, depending on where you live. It contains the entire Mass with the changes, 4 musical settings for the Ordinary of the Mass (the sung reponses we make) and 40 new hymns (or at least new to Canadians whose parishes only use the CCCBā€™s ā€œCatholic Book of Worshipā€ II or III). Itā€™s about $10+tax.

Itā€™ll probably be in the pews of your local parish in the next few months but getting your own copy will allow you to practice the responses and give you a good idea of the flow of Mass.

Those who normally follow the Mass in a Missal or missalette will probably not have much of a problem with the new text, theyā€™ll just continue reading. Those of us who have the responses consigned to memory will have a greater difficulty not blurting out the words that are so familiar to us. Itā€™s going to be hard for me to go back to using a book during Mass, at least until I have the responses memorized again, something thatā€™s a bit more difficult at this point in my life, tropical moments are not the only symptoms of menopause. šŸ˜ƒ
 
That actually works out fairly well for me, Phemie, since I had to go to Moncton this weekend anyway. šŸ™‚ THanks for the tip.
 
Saying ā€œIā€ instead of ā€œWeā€ is going to be a problem for me. I actually like it better but habit is tough to break.

There will be an adjustment. I wouldnā€™t be surprised to hear a few ā€œAnd also with your spirit.ā€ But we will learn. The good thing is I will have to be more attentive and rely less on ā€œautomaticā€.

I attend the EF normally so when I do go to an OF parish I frequently mess upā€¦ particularly at the Confiteor. :o

The creed is much longer than three sentences. Iā€™m surprised your RCIA at your EF parish hasnā€™t yet taught it to you (even in Latin). Just think of it as the Apostleā€™s Creed Plus šŸ˜‰
