Someone brought this up on another board. VERY very disturbing. I find it hard to believe that the Jesuits these days are out to destroy anything but orthodox teaching:rolleyes:.

I do further promise and declare, that I will, when opportunity presents, make and wage relentless war, secretly or openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Liberals, as I am directed to do to extirpate and exterminate them from the face of the whole earth, and that I will spare neither sex, age nor condition, and that I will hang, waste, boil, flay, strangle and bury alive these infamous heretics; rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women and crush their infants heads against the wall, in order to annihilate forever their execrable race.

(This is taken from The Jesuit Extreme Oath of Induction as recorded in the Congressional Record of the U.S.A. (House Bill 1523, Contested election case of Eugene C. Bonniwell, against Thos. S. Butler, Feb. 15, 1913, pp. 3215-3216)

What am I to make of this?

I would recommend you not say heretical statements in front of a Jesuit.😃

100 years ago, this same language was being circulated as an alleged Knights of Columbus oath. Now the claim is that it’s a Jesuit oath. It was nonsense then, and it’s nonsense now.

It’s a hoax. Obviously Congressional records are not a valid source for Jesuit history! All that this professional-looking citation proves is that somebody claimed that there was such an oath in the course of a contested election. Yes right, very impressive historical evidence, isn’t it!

No historian takes this seriously. It is believed only by unthinking anti-Catholics who repeat it because it suits their prejudices. There is not one shred of evidence that there ever was such an oath.

If I recall correctly, the reason it was entered into the Congressional Record was to expose it as false and as a blatant case of anti-Catholicism at work in a political campaign. (It is rather like quoting the bible to prove that there is no God because the phrase “there is no God” appears in the bible. “The fool says in his heart, ‘there is no God.’”

According to the link provided by Church Militant, the oath contained in the Congressional Record was attributed to the Knights of Columbus, rather than the Jesuits. But hey, if you are going to make stuff up, why not keep going?

A bit of googling turns up some anti-Catholic/conspiracy websites and books which refer to the Oath of Induction. Its good to be aware that this kind of stuff is going on so we aren’t blind-sided by it.

SedesDomi, thanks for the good laugh! 🙂

“A bogus Knights of Columbus oath was circulated in the early 1900s as an anti-Catholic tactic designed to inflame Protestants and others. Although branded by a US Congressional Committee in 1913 as a fake used by American bigots, the bogus oath was used against Democratic candidate Alfred E. Smith in the 1928 presidential campaign and again against John F. Kennedy in 1960 in the West Virginia Democratic primary.”

Misinformation never goes away, it just keeps on going. This one has been going for over a century now.

I attended a Jesuit College and they do worst than that if you are late for class…

(ITS A HOAX!)

Haha I thought it was, but I wanted to be able to prove it was. I was a bit worried because I read it from an otherwise (or at least so I thought) very intelligent Protestant.

No way Hosea

I’ve never really come across any violent Jesuits, and I went to a Jesuit college.

All the Jesuits I know are inoffensive eggheads. Also, not a one of them is younger than I am, so I don’t think any have the strength to do violence to anyone! 😉

Altho way (way) back when my dh was an active priest, it was considered witty, when asked if one was a Jesuit, to reply: “No, I’m a Catholic priest.”
