Vespers/Compline?

I know this will be no use to you, but I thought I would mention it anyway, in case you ever come to London : Westminster Cathedral does choral Vespers every day at 5pm sung by the gentlemen of the choir (it claims to be the last catholic cathedral in the world to sing the daily office).

Well, they do have a certain heretical and schismatic institution in the same neighborhood to compete with, whose Vespers are also well known

It’s rare for us. On (20 Nov) the evening of the upcoming Feast of Christ the King our blessed parish will have **Vespers **and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

…as an aside. It is my understanding that Pilate, after investigating, did not want to execute Jesus. His insisting that the cross be labeled …King of the Jews was an intentional affront or veiled insult to the top Jewish religious authorities who conspired to get him out of the way. They objected to that, thus then the quote…“What I have written, I have written”.

Not to derail Vespers but over the years I’ve heard that Pilate’s wife was sympathetic to Jesus.

I know that the Carmelite Convent in Oak Cliff (West Dallas) has LOTH readings either before or after their morning mass, and the Cistercian Abbey in Irving, TX has Lauds, Vespers and Compline. Also, at my home FSSP parish, the priest and some of the boys from the University of Dallas sing Vespers from the 1962 Divine Office. You may want to check out the different convents and abbeys around you to see if any of them have public recitation of the Hours.

Just about any Benedictine or Cistercian abbey will allow the faithful into their church for the Divine Office. Hospitality is one of the major principles of the Rule of St. Benedict, which is the foundational rule of all three orders (there are two Cistercian orders). These will be your best bet for a regular celebration of the Divine Office. I’m lucky, I’m 35 min from a Benedictine abbey and Lauds and Vespers are in Latin Gregorian chant

I often attend Friday Vespers, once or twice a month and occasionally on Sundays. They even have first Friday benediction after Vespers, how cool is that! Also sung in Gregorian chant, in Latin: Ecce Panis, Tantum Ergo and all that.

They celebrate Vigils, Lauds, Terce, the Mass, Sext (combined with None, on feast days, None combined with Sext), Vespers and Compline every day. All are open to the public although on some rare occasions one of the minor hours may be celebrated in Chapter which of course is off limits to the public. Usually when there’s important business to attend to or occasionally when repair work is being done in the Church.

The local monastery of Dominican nuns publicly chants every hour, every day, except None (None is recited in public occasionally, I think). Since I am unable to drive (I’m only 15), I can almost never attend. I’ve been once, to Terce (followed by Mass), and it was beautiful. I hope I can attend more often in the future.

it is required that all priests and deacons pray the divine office. I think all 5

Seminarians are required to pray 2 of them

but as others in this thread said monastic communities are the ones who will pray it as a community that the public can come to (sometimes). I’m sure there are others. But it was Saint Benedict who began the divine office I believe so the divine office is a huge part of the monastic community.

Its great I live on benedictine property and a stones throw from the benedictine monastery and Church we go to Vespers every sunday and compline maybe once a month. Its amazing.

Our Cathedral parish is run by Franciscan friars. Every Thursday, we have exposition, adoration, and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. During adoration, we pray Vespers, then confession is available, then benediction.

I recently made a pilgrimage to Italy. In Cortina (small mountain town in the north), there were two churches; one diocesan and one run by Franciscans. At both, the clergy/religious and laity prayed Lauds and Vespers, every day.

In Rome, go to St Paul Outside the Walls. The Benedictine monks, led by the abbot, chant Vespers every evening (in Latin) and it is truly heavenly. They even had handouts!
