Hopefully this is an easy answer.

Sometimes I like to pray the Office of the Dead (Vespers) for someone, generally on an anniversary of their death or on the day of death.

As a rule, on Sundays, I pray the Vespers of that Sunday.

Sometimes, the anniversary or the death occurs on a Sunday, which is a conflict, as happened yesterday. Can you pray the Office of the Dead on a Sunday (one that isn’t also All Souls’)?

Thanks.

From the General Instruction
  1. For a public cause or out of devotion, except on solemnities, the Sundays of the seasons of Advent, Lent, and Easter, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, the octave of Easter, and 2 November, a votive office may be celebrated, in whole or in part: for example, on the occasion of a pilgrimage, a local feast, or the external solemnity of a saint.
Unless or until someone may clarify whether a “public cause” applies to public liturgies (as opposed to private devotion), I would avoid substituting an office on the enumerated days.
But yesterday was a Sunday of Ordinary Time, so I think it would be all right.

This type of question is something I have very little experience with so take my thoughts with that in mind, on such occasions could you pray the Office of the Dead the day before or after?

could you pray the Office of the Dead the day before or after?
That thought occurred to me as a possibility, and it’s likely what I’ll do. Or, could it be prayed in addition to the Sunday office? The former option would be better for me. I haven’t a lot of time to do both.

Honestly, I’d never considered the calendar complications. The only Office of the Dead I pray regularly is in memory of my father(†), which can collide with Sundays of Easter, and I’ve likely just run over them*. But if in collision with other associated moveable feasts, I’m sure I’d pray the office of the day and remember my father otherwise.

And which, since I pray as a private devotion, and not publicly, I don’t sweat it much.
