Hi there.

I was wondering, when they exhume a deceased Pope and put his body on display, how come they change the vestments?

Popes, like all priests, are buried in full Mass vestments and, like all Bishops, have the Mitre and other Episcopal Insignia on. But when they exhumed the bodies of Pius X, John XXIII and Innocent XI, they put the bodies in choir dress.

Apparently this is only done for Popes. Saint John Neumann’s body in Philadelphia is displayed in full Mass Vestments (interesting note, they recently changed his vestments into fancier ones).

I was wondering why. I know they have historical and symbolic reasoning for everything and I was curious what this in particular meant.
