Vestment color on Gaudete Sunday

In the "old (i.e. pre-conciliar) days, I recall most parishes had one set of rose vestments which was used for both Gaudete and Laetare Sundays. Whatever violet vestments they had were, as well, used equally for both both Lent and Advent.

But unless this thread is strictly limited to the EF, (which is does not seem to be the case), I find discussion of rose vestments rather amusing.

I recall that just prior to when the OF was rolled out, (probably starting in 1966), many Latin Rite parish churches burned (literally) the rose vestments. Others simply folded them up, boxed them, and put them in the basement to gather dust and/or mold. Of course it wasn’t only the rose vestments: they did whatever they did pretty much the same way with any vestment that wasn’t made of burlap, or polyester, or felt, etc, but the rose were inevitably first on the list.

Cavaille-Coll gave me a good laugh: ".…I have seen some, though, that were “shocking pink,” the color of Pepto-Bismol, …" The color sounds hideous and I can just imagine the fabric …

Do Deacons ever serve in numbers? I have never seen it done.

Happens all the time in the Byzantine tradition.

Post 13 is correct; Post 8, not.

(Studied Latin for years.)

Sorry.

Our parish doesn’t have rose vestments and we only have one set of violet. No distinction between Advent and Lent for us. The sanctuary is a clash of purple shades what with banners a reddish violet, the chasuble a bluish violet and the altar cloth a deep purple.

Oh, the above clashes royally with the red & gold window dressing put up a few days ago in honor of our parish’s 50th anniversary celebration on Gaudete Sunday. Why oh why do we decorate a church with red at Christmas??? Aren’t white and gold the liturgical colors of Christmas? Why this insistence on using ‘secular’ colors?

My pastor stated in this Sunday’s bulletin that he does not wear rose/pink vestments for Gaudete Sunday because *"*I felt it looked effeminate." He added “This 3rd Sunday is known as Gaudete Sunday from the first word of the Entrance antiphonmeaning rejoice. But rose/pink looked terrible.”

He then went on to explain why that color was selected–

“Looking at the horizon after the dark, cold and weary night, and just before the sunbegins to rise, one sees a rose glow in the sky. Eastern theology took that glow to signify hope and longing of the people. Hence the color ‘Rose’ for the vestments.”

Despite the explaination it still appears that he will not wear pink/rose as he hasn’t in the past.

Question: Is that color required on the 3rd Sunday of Advent or can the priest continue to wear purple?

The GIRM instruction on this is quoted in the OP. Post #5 gives an even clearer explanation. Short answer: No, not required.

Our former pastor implied the same reason for not wearing rose vestments.

Rose is ‘permitted’ on Gaudete Sunday, not ‘mandated’ . Violet vestments are still the norm.

Either color is the norm on these 2 days.
