I am a single female. Is it wrong to use a vibrator for sexual frustaration? Is it a sin?
 
Um…I believe that’s on the same level as masturbation, which is a mortal sin.

What you are describing is masturbation and it is grave matter. That given the knowledge of it being grave matter and the will to engage in the act anyways is known as mortal sin.

2352 of the Catechism:
By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139

Donna, are you asking because you do not know if masturbation is sinful, or because you wonder if using a vibrator somehow differs from masturbation?
 
Yes it is sinful. Whether mortally so or not is something between yourself and your confessor.

Well, it certainly is serious matter. (One of the three elements that go toward making a mortal sin.)

I’d throw that thing in the trash. It’s not worth your soul. It’ll only lead you to unhappiness.

Here’s what I’d do to fight the temptation, though.
  1. Stay away from all porn, including TV and movies. ALL of it.
  2. Start praying the Rosary daily. Go to daily Mass if you can.
  3. If you fall into sin, go to Confession ASAP and get back on track. The Saints were Saints not because they never fell, but because every time they fell, they got right back up and resolved not to fall again.
  4. Pray to God to lead you into the vocation He has in mind for you.
  5. Guard your thoughts. If you find them “straying” then say a quick prayer, especially to the Blessed Mother, and ask for help. Then, find something else to do. Go for a walk, read a novel (clean one!), etc.

I guess I ask because it can be a very annoying frustration that lasts for days and I don’t know what to do about it and I’m looking for relief.It is like a suffering that lasts for days unless relieved by a vibrator.
 
Well, you still didn’t answer the exact question, but, in any case, you have received good and correct information. Use of a vibrator is one example of masturbation, which is a seriously disordered act. If you do it freely and with full knowledge that it is wrong, you commit a mortal sin.

Your confessor can help you discern if indeed it is a mortal sin in your particular case, depending on the degree of your knowledge at the time, and whether or not you are enslaved by habit, etc. Only your confessor can judge this.

So get to confession and begin again. Find things to occupy your mind that do not involve sex. Get plenty of physical exercise so you are really tired when you go to bed. And pray for the gift of holy purity. One lovely custom is to use holy water before bed and pray 3 Hail Marys for purity before retiring for the night.

No excuse. Everybody goes through that, even me. I don’t masturbate.

Because you are used to using the vibrator you may find it harder to resist…well, this is exactly what sin does. It attaches itself to us to the point where it is hard to resist.

During this time take the energy you have an put it toward something good, like helping the poor, learning, reading about God, exercise and praying for you future husband (or current husband). Whatever you do, resist and pray to God to help you. He wont refuse.

And therein lies the addiction to masturbation…
 
Does anyone else have any other ideas on how to overcome this sin?
 
There really isn’t much else, if anything, Donna. You’ve been offered catechetical instruction so you know exactly what you are doing, as well as suggestion to see a priest who can also help to guide you, and after confession you’ll have a greater spiritual strength as well; you’ve been offered a support group, you’ve been offered several very reasonable suggestions by posters that involve not just ‘prayer’ but physical exercise and ‘productive activities’ to engage in rather than this sin. . .

Personally I would suggest you check out the support group that was offered by Curl (see his link) as these people know the kind of struggle you’re going through.

Have you tried any of what has been offered to you so far? I think until you’ve tried ‘all’ the suggestions you will not need to ask if people have any ‘other ideas’, because the ones already out there might do the trick for you. You can’t know until you have tried. . .and not just for a period of a few hours either! So good luck and God bless.
 
I am a guy, Married, and its so hard sometimes.

I try to read the bible, that will put me to sleep, or ease the frustration. It usually happens when my wife is tired and goes to bed before me( I don’t blame her at all) and I stay up on my laptop…

Its hard sometimes to close when I know what I want to do. But I will grab the bible and start reading. Eventually I will get tired and go to bed.

It’s hard for me, I want to get better, I feel horrible and ashamed for it.
 
I wish I could expres how I over-came my impurity addiction. I wish I could help you guys. But I remember, around 5 months ago when I started getting more into my faith (as one does!) I learnt it was wrong, I was ashamed, disgusted, etc and I just… stopped. And it hasn’t been at all difficult for me. I thank the Lord and Mary, I pray the Rosary every day and attend mass 2-4 times a week, so that is probably the key!
