You know, it strikes me that, if Jesus Christ were dead (which of course, He is alive, but bear with me here…)…If He were dead, then He couldn’t have a vicar. Could He? I mean, there has to be a living God, in order for there to be someone/someones representing Him?

**vic·ar **
3. Roman Catholic Church. an ecclesiastic representing the pope or a bishop.
4. a person who acts in place of another; substitute.
5. a person who is authorized to perform the functions of another; deputy: God’s vicar on earth.

Oh look what Saint Paul says:

2 Corinthians 2:10:
10 And to whom you have pardoned any thing, I also. For, what I have pardoned, if I have pardoned any thing, for your sakes have I done it in the person of Christ.

Wow. An Apostle forgiving someone in the person of Christ?

Kinda sounds like the Sacrament of Reconciliaton, doesn’t it?

:yup:

In context from the NAB
5
2 If anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure (not to exaggerate) to all of you.
6
This punishment by the majority is enough for such a person,
7
so that on the contrary you should forgive and encourage him instead, or else the person may be overwhelmed by excessive pain.
8
Therefore, I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.
9
For this is why I wrote, to know your proven character, whether you were obedient in everything.
10
Whomever you forgive anything, so do I. For indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything,** has been for you in the presence of Christ, **

Well, the word translated as “person” in the KJV and “presence” in the NAB is “prosopon” = ‘face’. Frankly, this time I think the KJV is closer to the mark. "I did it with the face of Christ. Paul says **"I" ***have forgiven. *

Excellent point! Thanks for making it.

No single vatican thing gets under my skin and appears more blasphemous than this title, seriously someone help me understand how this is NOT blasphemy!!!
Christ is alive! not DEAD!
HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT in His place (that is scriptural)
what does vicar mean? see this from wiki:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the broadest sense, a vicar (from the Latin vicarius) is anyone acting “in the person of” or agent for a superior (compare “vicarious”). In this sense, the title is comparable to lieutenant. Usually the title appears in a number of Christian ecclesiastical contexts, but in the Holy Roman Empire a local representative of the emperor, perhaps an archduke, might be styled “vicar”. “Representative” is the best definition of this word.

how can it be blasphemous for the pope to be a representative of Christ? its not blasphemous at all.

Vicar of Christ

(Latin Vicarius Christi).

A title of the pope implying his supreme and universal primacy, both of honour and of jurisdiction, over the Church of Christ. It is founded on the words of the Divine Shepherd to St. Peter: “Feed my lambs. . . . Feed my sheep” (John 21:16-17), by which He constituted the Prince of the Apostles guardian of His entire flock in His own place, thus making him His Vicar and fulfilling the promise made in Matthew 16:18-19.

In the course of the ages other vicarial designations have been used for the pope, as Vicar of St. Peter and even Vicar of the Apostolic See (Pope Gelasius, I, Ep. vi), but the title Vicar of Christ is more expressive of his supreme headship of the Church on earth, which he bears in virtue of the commission of Christ and with vicarial power derived from Him. Thus, Innocent III appeals for his power to remove bishops to the fact that he is Vicar of Christ (cap. “Inter corporalia”, 2, “De trans. ep.”). He also declares that Christ has given such power only to His Vicar Peter and his successors (cap. “Quanto”, 3, ibid.), and states that it is the Roman Pontiff who is “the successor of Peter and the Vicar of Jesus Christ” (cap. “Licet”, 4, ibid.). The title Vicar of God used for the pope by Nicholas III (c. “Fundamenta ejus”, 17, “De elect.”, in 6) is employed as an equivalent for Vicar of Christ.

newadvent.org/cathen/15403b.htm

882 The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter’s successor, “is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.”(LG 23.) “For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered.”(LG 22; cf. CD 2,9.)

We can also look to the Code of Canon Law:

SECTION I.

THE SUPREME AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH (Cann. 330 - 367)

CHAPTER I.

THE ROMAN PONTIFF AND THE COLLEGE OF BISHOPS

Can. 330 Just as by the Lord’s decision Saint Peter and the other Apostles constitute one college, so in a like manner the Roman Pontiff, the successor of Peter, and the bishops, the successors of the Apostles, are united among themselves.

Art. 1.

THE ROMAN PONTIFF

Can. 331 The bishop of the Roman Church, in whom continues the office given by the Lord uniquely to Peter, the first of the Apostles, and to be transmitted to his successors, is the head of the college of bishops, the Vicar of Christ, and the pastor of the universal Church on earth. By virtue of his office he possesses supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the Church, which he is always able to exercise freely.

Acting in the person of Christ?? no problem at all with that?Nope none whatever…

Galatians 2:20 And I live, now not I; but Christ liveth in me. And that I live now in the flesh: I live in the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered himself for me.

Luke 10:16 He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.

.
Yes a verse on the indwelling of the HS, how does this pertain to one person acting in the place of Christ…

Here is the whole verse…

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" A fine scriptural description of the pope as Vicar of Christ. How could the Vicar of Christ be wrong if we are all members of the Body of Christ? Are we not supposed to be Christ to those that we meet?

If people do not see Christ in us then they will not be drawn to Him.

I see Christ in Pope Benedict XVI and am drawn to Christ by his example and the grace of God.

Why don’t you go find fault where there really is a fault?

We humans have little to do with drawing others to God…See for yourself…
6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

I think of it this way too–it’s not a perfect analogy, but I think might be helpful. Our Lord is the Supreme head of the angels in Heaven (as He is the head of all who serve Him), but St. Michael is their chief commander–and his name means “who is like God” because of his heavenly commanding role.

Our Lord is also the Supreme Head of the entire Church, but the Pope is the chief of the Church militant, and is therefore rightly called the Vicar of Christ.

If as the bible says…

Then how can we have one of these whom have fallen short, be in charge of the body of Christ at the risk of salvation for millions?

EVERY religious leader is in charge of the souls of his flock - even if he’s a small time country pastor with a flock of a few dozen souls, or a father of a family who is ‘head’ of his wife alone. Every soul is important, so these people have a very great task placed upon them too.

As Paul says, Christ’s grace is sufficient - for those whom HE charges, which is Peter and the Apostles definitely, their successors ipso facto (since the succession was set up by them).
