Because Jesus said so.
He said “go ahead after your killed pass the keys and the UNIVERSAL power on to every man good or evil man that is the bishop of ROME to be in charge of my people?”
Can you share that scripture with me?

One step at a time - do you believe the key has been passed? 🙂

John 21: Feed my sheep. Since all of the sheep belong to Jesus, Peter is entrusted with feeding all of them.

Acts 1:16-26. Apostolic succession is established at the initiative of Peter. If the Apostles have successors, one of the successors must follow in the line of Peter and assume his task.

You are aware of the difference between infallibility and impeccability, are you not?

Maybe not. You seem not to have any idea about a lot of this stuff – for someone who claims to have been a “sacramentalist.”

Anyone?

In the broadest sense, a vicar (from the Latin vicarius) is anyone acting "in the person of" or agent for a superior (compare “vicarious”). In this sense, the title is comparable to lieutenant. Usually the title appears in a number of Christian ecclesiastical contexts, but in the Holy Roman Empire a local representative of the emperor, perhaps an archduke, might be styled “vicar”. “Representative” is the best definition of this word.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicar

how can it be blasphemous for the pope to be a representative of Christ? its not blasphemous at all./
Acting in the person of Christ?? no problem at all with that?

Yes, Jesus set it up that way. Why would that be a problem?

Luke 10:16

16 “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

I really don’t think you can appreciate this without understanding the meaning of the key of David. Or do you just have a problem with authority in general?

I answered above: Acts 1:15-26 and John 21, Luke 18.

You can knit this in with Isaiah 22.22.

The point is that the Boss SAID he would “build HIS Church”. If Peter is the rock upon which it will be built, then the keys entrusted to him must be transmitted – as the apostolic office is transmitted in Acts 1.

If I am not connecting the dots well enough for you, ask me where, and I will do my best to state things more clearly.

If as the bible says…
bible.oremus.org/?ql=48850708
Then how can we have one of these whom have fallen short, be in charge of the body of Christ at the risk of salvation for millions?
None of the Apostles were perfect, yet they were given authority.

1.Luke 22:29 (New King James Version)
29 And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me,

2.John 13:20 (New King James Version)
20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives **whomever I send **receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

3.John 16:14-15 (New King James Version)
14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

4.John 20:21 (New King James Version)
21 So Jesus said to them again,** “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”**

5.2 Corinthians 10:8 (New King James Version)
8 For even if I should boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed—

6.1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (New King James Version)
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and **are over you in the Lord **and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

7.1 Timothy 5:17 (New King James Version)
17 Let **the elders who rule **well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.
**
Although I prefer to use the Douay-Rheims Bible **

1 Timothy 5:17:
17Let **the ****priests that rule **well, be esteemed worthy of double honour: especially they who labour in the word and doctrine:

King James Version sounds like President Bush Version, and do you think Jesus sounded like Shakesphere?🤷

The KJV doesn’t sound like Shakespeare; it sounds like Lancelot Andrewes! :harp: How can you not love it! I especially love it when it clearly and unequivocally elucidates a Catholic understanding!

Yes, this is true…The question is are you suggesting that your leader has acquired the same gift as these apostles?
This is a question embedded in a question embedded in a question. Apostolic Succession assures the passing on of the Apostolic gifts that are necessary for the salvation of souls through the life and growth of the Church.

Thus, the teaching authority given to the eleven at the Great Commission and the ability to forgive sins given in John 20 are part of the ongoing Apostolic charism, while the ability to heal the sick (still found in places) is no longer universal, partly because it is not essentially tied to the Apostolic work. Teaching and forgiving sins are the Apostolic work.

So tell me if you guys really believe the priest completely absolves sin in confession, why did Christ die?

Christ died to give the priest the power to act on His behalf when doing so 🙂

Surely you’ve been around here long enough to know that it’s not the priest forgiving sins by any power of his own, only as an agent of Christ.

John 20 when speaking of forgiving sins is in a ministerial not an absolution manner, Christ died on the cross** for the sins of the world**

Well, my brother, Priests could not do it if Jesus had not died and risen and given that power on to the Apostles.

Do I believe it? You bet! It’s just about the best thing about being Catholic! But maybe you have to experience it to believe it. There are definitely THREE people in that room – and one of 'em has the initials “JC”!

If they’re being absolved now, does that mean the pain and suffering Christ went through before dying really didn’t account for ALL sins, cuz Father O’malley would handle a few?
