"The announcement makes official what has been expected since last year, when A+E took a 10 percent, $250 million stake in Shane Smith’s Vice Media. The new channel, with the working name of Viceland, will launch in 70 million homes on top cable and satellite providers including DirecTV-AT&T, which has 26 million video subscribers, and Comcast, which is in 22 million homes. Other providers that will carry Vice’s channel include Time Warner Cable and Dish Network . . .
Powered with cash from Silicon Valley (Technology Crossover Ventures invested $250 million in 2014) and traditional media (21st Century Fox took a 5 percent, $70 million stake in 2013), Smith has asserted that Vice is worth $4 billion and has of late hinted that a public offering could be the next step in expansion. A brash executive who also is Vice’s biggest on-air personality, Smith long has aspired to launch his own TV network. But negotiations last year with Time Warner to take over HLN broke down over creative control. Smith and his team — Spike Jonze will be the channel’s creative director — will control the content on Viceland and get less than half of the value of the channel. With an additional $200 million investment from Disney, A+E will get another 7 percent stake in Vice for a total of close to 15 percent of the company . . .
The network’s primetime slate includes Gaycation with Ellen Page and Ian Daniel, *Huang’s World *with Eddie Huang, *Noisey, Vice World of Sports *with Sal Masekela, Flophouse, Party Legends and Weediquette."

Shame on 21st Century Fox, “Disney”, A+E for investing tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in and Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Dish Network for broadcasting this dreck.

Instead of Viceland they should have called the channel Wasteland.

R.I.P. History 2 Channel.

Wow, this is terrible news.

HC2 is a mainstay in my house. Along with the Smithsonian Channel, they do show some interesting shows on interesting subjects. It used to be The History Channel until they went with marathons of Pawn Stars, Swamp People or American Pickers and other such reality drivel.

Viceland looks like another SpikeTV, only worse. Why in the world would Disney invest in such garbage? ( ahhh, don’t answer that…)

TV is truly becoming a wasteland, offering more and more channels but less to watch.

I just read something last night about this guy. who is he and where did he come from? so there will be no more A & E? we don’t have cable anymore or satellite. I remember when cable fist started there was little advertising. that has definitely changed. it wasn’t worth the money you were paying we didn’t think. even with over 200 channels sometimes I could find nothing to watch.
the titles you mentioned of shows on Viceworld don’t mean anything to me. I have never heard of the names before.

Don’t worry, I’m sure someone will rush in to fill the “ancient alien BS/factually wrong documentary” void.
LOL. That’s what I was thinking. There’s very little historically accurate about any of the allegedly “History” channels.
I would love for them to go away.
We’ve often mused that we should just make something up out of whole cloth and sell it to them and make some cash. . 😃

Cable’s dead. Things are moving to streaming anyway.

how much money did they spend laying all those fiber optic cables years ago? is streaming cheaper than cable and satellite?
Oh heavens yes.
My internet still comes through the cable company, but that’s all I pay for. We pay a total of 16 bucks a month for both Hulu and Acorn (British TV), my daughter pays for our Netflix. Since I like older shows I tend to prefer Hulu. Netflix I’m not wild about. But that’s just my personal opinion.
As for cable, this is what happens when only a few corporations run those “100+” channels.

I was confused about that too. The A&E Channel will still be there. The only thing changing is H2.

Yep, there was a fair amount of garbage TV documentaries every week on H2, but I would estimate those type of programs were perhaps around 1/4 of the weekly schedule.

H2 excelled in one area: Ancient History; they had decent though perhaps not great documentaries about Ancient Egypt, Bible Battles, Ancient military leaders, Ancient Discoveries, Ancient Einsteins and Ancient Battle Tech.

They also would run the monumental and several ‘WWII in HD’ series (WWII in HD; WWII in HD: The Air War; and WWII in HD: Normandy) once in a while, which were on par with the old Thames Television ‘World At War’ series. As well as some science and technology programming and some occasional specials.

Those type of history programs enlighten, inform, and entertain, and are a lot more interesting to watch than seeing a Lesbian and some grungy Marxist college kids armed with cameras trying to crash a Ted Cruz rally, which is what the Viceland / Wasteland Channel is going to feature.

So…you think they should be history? :hmmm:

😃

Well, Viceland is off and running and bringing television to new lows and I’m having serious withdrawal pains without History 2!

I thought that History Channel 1 was going to pick-up some of the shows that His 2 used to put on, but no, they are still airing marathons of their stupid collection of stupid shows like Swamp People, Ax Men and Pawn Stars! Aaaargh! How much can one man take?!:crying:

What is the future for History Channel? Quality documentaries on interesting subjects or will they continue the reality marathon drivel?:o
