There are probably reasons why it can’t be done, but I would like to see the U.S. pull all troops out of Germany other than a few small contingents protecting U.S. embassies, and re-stationing them and their facilities in Poland. I would enter a secret agreement with Poland to station some of the troops, along with some Polish troops on the German border, though with the bulk of them near the Ukrainian border. Got to keep an eye on those unfriendly Germans as well as the Russians! 🙂
 
I have Polish cousins who would rather US soldiers be not there. Personally I think Germany feels the same. Too much politics at work here.

Is war with Russia their only fear?

Or are there real economic issues in play here?

Perhaps you do. But the U.S. is popular in Poland, which it is not in Germany.

If Germany doesn’t want the U.S. troops there, why is Merkel complaining about removing 1/3 of them?

Because the German economies near the bases depend on the US troops being there–same reason people don’t like military bases here being closed down.

Did they misquote Merkel, or what criticism do you have of Hanson’s analysis?
