Thank you all for your responses. I hope I didn’t offend anyone with the question about the sex shop. I haven’t been to either stores (VS not here in the East Coast of Canada) so I had no way to know.

It was a good question and I think you received some good answers. That is what we are here for. I shop there myself for gifts, but refuse to enter when my wife goes in to look at the stuff I would rather not look at. I think if there ads incite any kind of sin it is more likely to be vanity than lust.

For some of us it would be the sin of despair.😃

There is hardly a husband alive that would discourage his wife from coming to bed wearing VS attire! That being said, I wish they would tone down their advertising a bit.

The average VS model is a drop dead gorgeous 19 year-old girl who hasn’t eaten a decent meal in the last 5 years. These advertisers have also somehow have gotten the idea that silicone and make-up can compete with God’s creative artistry.

I would like to see them use models that look more like the average American housewife who takes decent care of herself. She more represents beauty as God intended. It would make women feel more comfortable and confident in the bedroom.

👍

I think that the reason the ads are targeted towards men is to make them more comfortable buying gifts for their wives (and girlfriends–don’t get huffy-there are a lot of perfumes, lotions, makeup, etc. that a chaste man could buy for a chaste lady) at VS.

For years, men have struggled with the idea of buying a pretty, sexy gift for their wives. In the past, they either had to traipse through the J.C. Penney’s, where some old lady making a little part-time money would try to help out the poor guy back in the lingerie section, which generally featured big, stiff, white bras and giant nylon panties.

OR…they had to drive to the edge of town to the sex shop to find lacy panties and bra or a sexy nightie.

OR…they had to find a Mr. Frederick’s catalogue and thake their chances that the Size 14 in that catalogue really WOULD fit their post-partum wife (and usually, it came no where near fitting the wife.)

So many men resigned themselves to flowers and candy, which is fine, but not necessarily something that caused excitement in the bedroom and a revival of romance after dark.

NOW a man can walk into a VS, along with plenty of other men, and talk to a knowledgeable sales clerk who will advise him about a purchase for his woman. There are no peep shows running in the back room, there is no possibility of prostitution (this happens at the “downtown” “lingerie” --yeah, sure!–stores).

I think that this kind of thing helps a marriage immensely. If a man gives his wife a vacuum cleaner for her birthday or Valentine’s Day,–well, some women will appreciate it. But a vacuum cleaner doesn’t tell her, “You’re the most beautiful woman on earth.” THAT’s what a gift from VS tells teh woman. The man looked at the giant photos of those beautiful models and said, “Hey, my wife is as beautiful as those ladies. I should buy HER the same nightgown that the model is wearing. She’ll look better in it than that model. And we can “enjoy” the gift together in bed later and for weeks and months afterward.”

What is so sinful about that? I think it’s sweet.

I won’t shop anyplace that sends me catalogues that have to go in the trash. VS, and Ambercrombie are some on the list.

do you want me to buy your product? don’t send softcore to my house.

(wacoal bras are superb and they employ sales staff to fit me, too.)

lol Monicatholic I love you. You are fo sho one of my fav posters

I was meaning I agreed with FEBRUARY and the original poster seemed to be a bit judgemental of this engaged lady just cause maybe she was buying a bra. Or maybe even some nice lingerie for her honeymoon?
Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up!

I’m too fat for Victoria’s Secret lingerie–I WISH they would come up with “Queen Victoria’s Secret.” Sigh. Sweet.

But my beautiful daughters love the VS bras for the support, comfort, and quality (they last longer than other bras).

And I love several of their fragrances–even a fat lady can fit into a fragrance.

Women have to buy lingerie somewhere. Through their positioning of their products (with sexy women wearing them in revealing poses), Victoria’s Secret reminds us of the power that we wield over men. That’s not a bad thing for a woman to be aware of–I think that some women have no idea how they can affect a man, or they don’t want to face that power because then they would have to change the way they dress and act. Victoria’s Secret makes it perfectly clear that the way a women dresses and acts WILL affect a man.

As Christian women we should be aware of that power and the possibility that it can destroy us and the men we come into contact with. We should behave modestly and with charity so that we don’t become an occasion of sin for a man. Modest behavior does not forbid the wearing of pretty lingerie, but it means that only our HUSBANDS should see or touch that pretty lingerie.
I’m joining you on this bench. Their lotions and fragrances make you feel just so luxurious. I wish they would “extend” their line, too.

I wish I looked as good as the models do. Personally, I think lots of us here wish we COULD shop at VS.
To the poster who wants a Queen VS…me too!!

Kathy

I have ordered from VS online several times. I always call the order in because I want to MAKE SURE I am not put on the mailing list for their catalogs (have two teenage boys in the house). The call center associate always assures me I will not be put on the mailing list. And I never have been! So I have to say that VS is pretty good about NOT sending catalogs to people who request not to receive them.

As far as shopping at VS stores, I just have to say that VS is the one store I can spend as much $$ as I want to and know my husband will just smile when he sees that pink-striped bag coming through the door. 😉 He loves that I care enough to want to wear pretty things for him 😃

my husband does too. not shopping as VS doesn’t mean he and i don’t care about this.

as for getting off their mailing list, i’m off it. still i won’t spend my money with a company that sends out softcore. my house doesn’t receive it anymore, but many do. and, as some posters mentioned, walking past the at the mall is an occasion fo sin.

my teen boys have a hard enough time understanding and maintaining chastity. my teen girls have a tough enough time embracing a healthy, modest body image. VS advertising undermines everything we’re trying to impart to them.

VS doesn’t get my money.

Monica,

I am so sorry if my post in any way suggested to you (or anybody else who decides that VS is not for them) that I was implying you did NOT like to wear pretty things for your husband. Only the first paragraph in my post was meant as a reply to you, in the sense that I wanted to point out that VS has very much respected my wishes not to have their catalog come to my house.

The second paragraph was simply my ramblings about shopping VS in general and how happy it makes my husband to see that pink-striped bag.

I would never want to imply I was somehow superior to you for shopping at VS…far from it. I think women need to support each other and not cut each other down.

So sorry if I inadvertently caused offense,
Lauren

I figure if you don’t want to shop there don’t!! It certainly doesn’t mean that you don’t like pretty things. We all have different experiences with the same company, and where one may have a good experience, another may have a bad. That is why it is wonderful that we have so many different companies to choose from.

I don’t have a problem with Victoria’s Secret. I don’t even mind taking my children in there. I took my 10yo there to get her first bra, and the sales ladies were awesome. I loved how they made it a big deal for her.

Yesterday when I was in there I actually noticed that they have toned down their advertising some. In our mall the front of the store has the pajamas and sweats and such on one side, and the perfumes and lotions on the other. The more intimate stuff is in the back of the store.

I agree. VS and La Senza adds don’t offend me. I shop there and love wearing their stuff. It’s not that big of a deal really and I too have noticed that their adds have been toned down in the last couple of years.

So sorry if I inadvertently caused offense,
lauren,

i responded with just a wee bit defensiveness. it is i who am sorry. please forgive.
