Just to clear up a point about the Jewish culture of slavery, slaves were considered part of the family. Indeed, slaves could inherit their masters’ property if he had no sons. In just the opposite from our day, hired people had no rights. They only worked for others as long as they were needed and then they were on their own. So, in many ways, being a slave in a Jewish household was almost as good as being a free man, as far as rights were concerned. Also, slaves had to be set free after a certain period of time unless they wished to be permanently joined to a household. So, really, their is little comparison to the 19th century slavery in the southern states of America.
