I want to have fun wholesome action video game to let my neices and nephews play when they visit. Most of them do not have much of this stuff @ home so coming to our house to play would be a great treat. 8-12 yr age range. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I am 19, and I REALLY enjoyed the Spongebob Squarepants “The Movie” Game…IT was fun, actually!!

Hmm…I could think of others later

Mario Brothers is still one of my kids’ faves…they have somewhat outgrown it, but they’ll play it on a rainy day now and again. I consider it wholesome. My son is now 16 and into Call of Duty, Assassins Creed…I wouldn’t recommend those. :o But Mario Bros. is cute.

My 6 year old son LOVES Mario Kart. I haven’t seen anything objectionable in it either.

The other posters seem to assume that you have the Nintendo Wii. Do you have the Wii, or some other system? Are you currently planning on buying a system?

Or maybe I’m missing something here. 🤷

Totally agree! I grew up on Mario Bros. and I’m still playing! There are so many different versions of Mario for different game platforms. They’re easy games, but can provide a lot of challenge when necessary.

***It really is adorable. You know what is a cute game to play on the computer…a cd rom game? Pajama Sam! Anyone hear of that? My dd still loves it, she would never admit it…lol but she does. :o ***

True! My dh will walk around and say…‘Hi, It’s me…Maaarrio!’ when dd plays this. It’s like clockwork. :o

Ah, that’s right…what system do you have exactly.
I’m a gaming expert, and I’d be able to tell ya a million titles depending on what system you have.

I don’t have system . . yet. I am absolutely clueless to this stuff. Many thanks.

Well, if you’re looking to get a system, I totally recommend the Wii. I have a 360, but the Wii is something else entirelly.

And take ther others’ advice on the game choices.

Mario, Wii Sports…whew…a lot.But just those alone will last for a LONG LONG LONG time!

The Wii would be a great choice. Although there are a few games made for the Wil with Teen or Mature ratings, the majority of the games are made to be played by all ages. Great game system to get families active together. Most of the other game systems seem to have a much broader variety of games that would be innapropriate for children. Not knocking anyone who plays them, just saying…

Well, for PC, yes, I would recommend the Pajama Sam series (there’s 4 that I’m aware of–“No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside” “Thunder and Lightning Aren’t so Frightening” “You Are What You Eat from Your Head to Your Feet” and “Life Is Rough When You Lose Your Stuff”). I’d also recommend browsing through Reflexive.com (you can sort by type of game like puzzles, seek and finds, strategy) … those are all ‘try before you buy’ so just download anything that you think might be enjoyed and buy anything that actually is enjoyed. Farm Frenzy (and Farm Frenzy 2 … I know there’s another but I haven’t tried it yet) are a lot of fun, and not beyond the age group you’re looking at. Basically, you get an hour to try out any program, no limit to how many you download … if you like it, buy it; if you don’t, uninstall it–and there’s tons to choose from, so you’re almost certain to find something suitable. Personally, I really like the time management genre (Diner Dash series, Build a Lot series) and I would recommend the first 2 titles in the Mystery Case Files series (but it starts taking a dark turn at title 3 … these are now, I believe, only available at Big Fish). These would be MCF: Huntsville and MCF: Prime Suspects. Ravenloft starts getting VERY dark, and it just gets darker as the series continues.

Ancient Quest of Saqqarah, if you ignore the Egyptian mythology bit which could be problematic for the 8-12 set, has outstanding puzzles.

TRue, there are plenty of more hardcore titles available for the other systems.

HOwever, the Xbox 360 has been coming out with more and more family-themed games.
There are tons of arcade games and even virtual board games (Though the board games are over-priced IMHO)

But in this case, the Wii is definitely the best choice.
Mario Kart looks REALLY fun, and I think Mario baseball is cool, too!
Wii sports will keep everyone busy for a while, though…Bowling, baseball, tennis, golf…whew…

My sons and I usually game on our PCs but we got an Xbox 360 Pro for Christmas. My 6 year old thought the graphics on the Wii were good enough (I wanted a Wii). However he is use to playing on a PC with a high end graphics card so even though he is young he is probably not the norm.

If they don’t have a lot of experience or one at home, get the Wii as suggest in my opinion. There are a LOT of people who have never gamed before who just love it (of ALL ages, Preschool to Retirement Communities, not kidding on the retirement communities either).

Mine have Nintendo DSs so they play those for Mario but with multiple kids, just get a Wii. There are usually bundles with 1 or 2 games and you will need to purchase an extra controller I believe. If it comes with 1 game, you might buy another like Mario Cart or something but in most cities you can rent games. No use spending $60 on something they won’t be there to play most of the time. Just got rent a few for the weekend.

Some Mahjongg maybe? Or Chessmaster series?

I would also look for non-“gangsta” car racing games (Colin McRae series qualifies) and business sims (beware that historical city sims typically involve erecting temples to deities of that time and place, which would be bad for people who take it too seriously).

If you can find Gruntz, get it. Lovely stuff.

It depends on which game systems you have. For the Playstation 2, I stongly recommend the Kingdom Hearts games, but they must be played in order (KH, KH: Chain of Memories, and then KHII). For Wii, You’re safe with Mario Kart or Legend of Zelda. I don’t have an Xbox, but there are some games all the systems have that are fun, including the Legos games like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Kingdom Hearts is my favorite by far, and my kids love them!!!👍

It all depends on their maturity level, and what type of games they like.
Do you have a list of games that you already own?

While you can’t find them very often in console games, basic computer wargames are very safe in not offering temptations. Pick a side and fight out WWII Eastern front, or any other place, and it’s just a matter of picking a strategy and reacting to the enemy. Wargaming is my favorite type of entertainment and involves lots of thinking towards a goal.
