Is it sinful to make a virtual video game character sacrifice tuo another, fake god/power inside of a video game? I mean, it’s not like you, the real player believe the fake god thing is true.

What if that fake god is an evil force in the game?

It’s not like I’d actually be worshipping another god (plus, its within a game, so it’s twice as fake 😛 )

Thanks.

idk i’ve been wondering this too so i posted here too find out too 😃

I think it’s okay. The important thing to know is that you have to know what’s fake and what’s real and if the game will influence you to possibly become an idolater.

No worse than reading a first person novel with mythology. I think theres a classic which does such.

Dont worry about it. Its just a game. You arent out killing people and you dont sound like you take a lot of satisfaction in sacrificing people. The day your actions start to reflect bad choices in games is when you have to worry. To count what you do as wrong is to say that authors sin every time they have a character kill someone in a book. So, dont worry, be happy, and seek the truth.

Personally, I wouldn’t do it (unless the sacrifice isn’t a person) but that’s more to do with how I see myself in fiction. 😛

Ultimately though, so long as you don’t let it affect your RL, you’re good.

Just the other day I was playing Halo 2, and one of the two protagonists of that is Thel 'Vadam, Arbiter of the Covenant, and the first mission you do as him is persecuting people who dare to point out that the Covenant’s religion is basically a Heaven’s Gate suicide cult based on the misinterpreted records of an extinct civilization.

Now, eventually Thel himself realizes the Covenant is wrong; presumably, his people might eventually question its teachings of eugenics and population control, which cause practices like certain classes of officer in their military having the right to mate with any female, even other males’ wives. But him doing that persecution is an important step in his character development.

As long as the art in question isn’t actually immoral, things that are necessary to achieving the artistic effect are morally permissable.

But isn’t the point of video games to beat people up? that’s why I play them…
