Suffering is inevitable in this world.
We can let it embitter us.
Or we can turn it into something useful ((for instance, somebody starts a support group for cancer patients/grieving people/substance abusers trying to get sober)
We Catholics can “offer it up”.

That said, sometimes suffering can reach a level where it overwhelms our ability to cope.

There is no shame in reaching out for help.
It’s okay to be on the receiving end of other people’s agape.

Suffering is different from pain. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is something that we don’t necessarily have to experience

Yes, they had just been hit with the bone cancer and then swiftly followed by their daughters death. For various reasons we have not shared a close relationship but nevertheless the news was awful. It made me think hard.

It’s a good idea to just let them talk about her in their own way, thank you.

Thanks, I’ll read that tomorrow because it’s a bit long, but it looks valuable.

Yes, Tis, I think you are right that willingly accepting the consequences of something we did in order to atone is likely a good thing.

For me the most difficult part , is to not get all caught up on condemning thoughts, some times my mind is clear enough to recognise this (emotional) pain, could be a gift. But like I said ,most of the time , I feel the pressure of the pain and I cannot see anything beyond that.

We are made in the image and likeness of God. A very positive thought. But then, walk toward the altar in a Roman Catholic Church and look at the crucifix above the altar (assuming it has the suffering corpus upon it) and realize that is an image and likeness of God to which we are also made. Then realize that Christ’s suffering ended, his faithfulness to the Father never did. A good example for us to consider when undergoing our own pain and suffering.
I think looking at all suffering in that light makes it, if not altogether bearable, at least understandable.
My $.02.

Pray to Our Lord and know that your prayers are heard. May He clear your thoughts and lighten your burden I pray.

‘A good man always finds enough over which to mourn and weep; whether he thinks of himself or of his neighbor he knows that no one lives here without suffering, and the closer he examines himself the more he grieves.’ - The Imitation of Christ

What are our views on the subject of suffering?

I realise that this could be a highly emotive subject so please be respectful, courteous and polite, thank you.
Suffering is part of life. Personally I accept it and realise that if I can offer it up it’ll actually do me some good and maybe get to heaven faster.

My view may be influenced by the fact that I suffered from chronic epilepsy for years and it kinda toughened me up a bit so I don’t really care that much of the more trivial suffering.
