Is playing call of duty on like Xbox live where there is a team of 4 people or so against another 4 people or so a sin? Everyonce in a while i play a couple games with friends but I am wondering if this is sinful? Thanks for answers
 
A video game is not inherently sinful.

If you feel like playing this specific video game is a near occasion of sin for you, I would suggest asking your priest next time you see him.

Not really… only if you try to reneact some of those scenes in real life, but other than that… fuhgetaboudit!:hey_bud:

I don’t think video games by themselves is sinful, but it all depends on you.

If you play every now and then with some friends for a few hours for a good time, then no, there is nothing sinful.

If you play every night for hours on end, allowing it to consume your life while also putting some bad thoughts in your mind which then lead you to other sins (such as video games with nudity and/or sex, which leads to lustful thoughts and impure actions), then yes, video games can be sinful because you are allowing it to consume your life. Everything in moderation.

We need to make sure to set aside time everyday for our family and God. If you decide, for instance, that every night at 9:00 you will spend 30 minutes of scripture reading and 30 minutes of prayer, then one night (and even following nights) decide that it is more important to spend time playing video games than to spend time with God, then yes, I’d say that is becoming sinful because you are not making God your number one priority.

I go to a catholic prayer group in Dublin and quite often some of us get together to play Call of Duty on Xbox. (Usually the guys… 😃 )
There is nothing wrong with it as long as you don’t actually start getting weapons and shooting people in the fashion portrayed in the game… 👍

Violence doesn’t make a video game evil , in my opinion. There are some with very satantic themes which I think should be avoided.

However, avoid making them an idol, ie. playing them instead of goign to mass.

I love a good violent video game. Fallout 3 is my current poison [not happy with New Vegas though]. I blew up an entire town in that game.

I’m also against abortion for all reasons, against the death penalty and against euthanasia…

So obviously, not every one is influenced for the worse with violent games.
 
I wonder. What would be the reaction if there was a scene in such games (properly rated of course. Would not end up in the hands of a minor) of adultery committed by the main character? Or a homosexual act? Are such things considered less acceptable then a mortal sin(murder)? And for the record even in the specific game mentioned, Call of Duty, there are acts of plain murder, not simple killing due to war or self defense.
 
Nope and I think I’ll be one of the first on this thread to use the “Cuz it ain’t real” argument. Furthermore, even within the context of the game itself, not all acts of violence are sinful.

For instance, my favorite genre is Fantasy RPG. Suppose in one game, I’m walking along a snowy mountain path. The wind is not too strong but the snowfall is a little heavy. All of a sudden, I’m ambushed by rugged mountain bandits. Since I always fancy myself a mage in such games, I proceed to incinerate, freeze, electrocute, rock-crush, life-drain, and telepathically strangle them all to death. Sure it’s violent but according to Catholic teaching, my actions are justified because all I did was act in self-defense… in the best way I know how. :cool:
